airBaltic, the Latvian airline, announced plans to cut its direct routes from Lithuania by nearly half next summer, reducing the number of direct flights from 20 to just 10. The decision comes as the company works to streamline operations and focus on markets with stronger demand and profitability. According to the airline's latest update, from late March through late October next year, airBaltic will operate eight direct routes from Vilnius and two from Palanga. This represents a significant reduction compared to the current summer schedule, which includes 20 direct routes from Vilnius and two from Palanga. The revised flight schedule is part of an updated business strategy aimed at optimising resources and improving financial stability. Vilnius will serve as a key hub for several international destinations. From there, airBaltic will operate up to four daily flights to Riga, two daily flights to Amsterdam, and 10 weekly flights to Tallinn. Additionally, the airline will maintain six weekly flights to Paris and Munich, while offering two weekly flights each to Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and Lisbon. These adjustments reflect a strategic shift towards high-demand corridors and more profitable routes. Palanga, another major airport in Lithuania, will see fewer direct flights. The airline will continue to operate two weekly flights to Amsterdam and up to two daily flights to Riga. Despite these reductions, passengers will still have access to a broader network via Riga, where airBaltic’s services connect to 57 destinations worldwide. Mantas Vrubliauskas, airBaltic’s vice president of network management, stated that Lithuania remains an essential part of the airline’s network. He noted the commitment to maintaining convenient travel options from both Vilnius and Palanga, even as operational priorities evolve. The airline has faced ongoing challenges, including rising fuel costs and financial pressures. In May, airBaltic cancelled planned summer flights between Vilnius and Krakow and suspended operations from Kaunas Airport due to increased expenses. These actions were necessary steps to manage costs and ensure long-term sustainability. Looking ahead, airBaltic plans to make further adjustments during the upcoming winter season. Flights from Vilnius to Berlin and Dubai will be discontinued, along with flights from Palanga to Tenerife. The airline will also reduce the frequency of flights between Vilnius and Tallinn, indicating a continued effort to align its operations with market demands and financial realities. These changes underscore the airline’s efforts to navigate a challenging industry landscape. By focusing on routes with greater revenue potential, airBaltic aims to enhance efficiency and secure a more stable financial position. As the aviation sector continues to face headwinds, such strategic moves are becoming increasingly common among airlines seeking to adapt and survive.
