Recent wildfires have swept across Britain’s upland moors and lowland heaths under unusually dry conditions, leaving vast stretches of land charred and smoky. These fires have raised concerns among ecologists and conservationists about the long-term health of these ecosystems. While some signs of renewal may appear swiftly, the process of full ecological recovery is likely to span decades. The immediate aftermath of a fire often leaves the landscape seemingly lifeless. However, certain plant species possess remarkable resilience. Dry lowland heaths, dominated by heather, are particularly affected by fire due to their high concentration of fine woody material, which fuels rapid combustion. Despite this, heather can rebound relatively quickly. Seeds stored beneath the soil surface can germinate following a fire, allowing young plants to emerge within months. Surviving heather plants also exhibit vigorous regrowth, enabling a familiar canopy to reestablish itself within a few years. In contrast, wet heaths display different characteristics. Species such as hare’s-tail cotton grass and purple moor grass form dense, fire-resistant tussocks that protect their roots during a blaze. New shoots can sprout from these structures within days, while other species like common cotton grass can regenerate from their subterranean root systems. This rapid response allows the landscape to regain a green appearance in a matter of weeks, though this does not equate to complete ecological recovery. Some key plant species, however, face greater challenges. Cross-leaved heath, a more delicate variant of heather, requires specific environmental conditions to recover. Its survival hinges on whether its roots remain shielded by waterlogged soil as the fire passes overhead. Similarly, sphagnum moss, or bog moss, possesses a unique ability to endure extreme heat. Its waterlogged tissues beneath the surface provide protection, allowing it to generate new growth tips, albeit at a slow pace. The impact of fire on dry peat is especially severe. When flames penetrate deeply into peat layers, they can smolder for extended periods, destroying the deep-rooted plants and underground seed reserves. The resulting landscape may become a barren expanse of exposed peat, making it difficult for species like heather or cotton grass to reestablish themselves for a decade or more. This highlights the critical role of peatland restoration in ensuring long-term ecological stability. Historically, Britain’s moors and heaths were shaped by natural processes and human activity. Lowland heaths were traditionally maintained through grazing by livestock and rabbits, which kept the vegetation open and heather-dominated. Upland moors, meanwhile, once featured extensive wet bogs and temperate rainforests that naturally resisted fire. These landscapes played a vital role in regulating water flow and preventing floods. Over the past two centuries, however, much of this natural diversity has been lost. Wet upland bogs have been drained and converted into drier, heather-rich heaths and moors through repeated drainage and controlled burning. This transformation has created an environment rich in flammable biomass, facilitating the rapid spread of wildfires. Although dominant species like heather and cotton grass can recover relatively quickly, the loss of biodiversity and functional complexity poses a significant challenge. Restoring these ecosystems is essential for their long-term viability. Efforts must focus on recreating the conditions that support a wide range of plant and animal life. This includes rehydrating peatlands, reintroducing native flora, and managing grazing practices to prevent further degradation. Without such interventions, the cycle of destruction and limited recovery may continue, threatening the ecological integrity of Britain’s moors and heaths.
