Advanced optical imaging reveals hidden activity in blood immune cells

Scientists have developed an advanced optical imaging technique called optical metabolic imaging (OMI) that allows for the non-invasive measurement of metabolic activity in individual immune cells within a complex blood sample. This method, which uses naturally occurring metabolic cofactors and two-photon microscopy, provides detailed insights into cell function without altering the cells or requiring fluorescent labels. The research, led by Melissa Skala at the Morgridge Institute for Research and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, highlights the potential of OMI to improve understanding of diseases like cancer and autoimmune disorders, as well as enhance cell therapies such as CAR T-cell treatments. The study was published in Biophotonics Discovery.
