Adeleke orders probe into Osun killings, seeks inquiry into police role

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued an Executive Order establishing a Coroner Inquest and Panel of Inquiry into the violent incident that took place at Naira and Kobo Junction, Motor Park/Garage Area, Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, on August 24, 2026. The order, effective from August 31, mandates a thorough investigation into the killings, shootings, injuries and broader violence reported at the location. The panel, led by Magistrate Ayokunle Shiyanbola, will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify the victims, determine both immediate and underlying causes of the violence, and assess whether criminal responsibility is linked to the deaths. It will also scrutinize the role of security operatives, including whether live ammunition or other weapons were deployed and whether such actions adhered to legal frameworks, rules of engagement and human rights principles. The inquiry will have broad authority to collect evidence, summon witnesses, and inspect relevant sites, including the crime scene and associated locations. The panel will be composed of several key figures, including retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police Aderanti Kayode, Dele Akintayo representing the Nigerian Bar Association, Wale Balogun from civil society organizations, and Babatunde Afolabi, a medical professional providing forensic expertise. The chairperson, Shiyanbola, is a magistrate, while Abiodun Badiora serves as the panel's secretary. The mandate includes identifying any individual, group, security personnel, political actor, transport union member, public official or other entity whose actions or omissions might have contributed to the violence. The inquiry is empowered to make recommendations regarding prosecution, disciplinary actions, compensation for victims, and institutional reforms aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. The governor has also directed the preservation of all relevant evidence, including firearms, ammunition records, station diaries, communication logs, incident reports, duty rosters, medical records, autopsy reports, photographs, and videos. These materials are crucial for ensuring transparency and accountability in the investigation. In addition to these directives, the Executive Order requires the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, the Police Service Commission, and the Osun State Commissioner of Police to implement interim administrative measures concerning any police officer whose ongoing operational command could hinder the inquiry or erode public trust. This step underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining integrity and impartiality throughout the process. The police command confirmed that two civilians were killed and three officers were injured during the violence. According to their statement, a group of approximately 30 armed individuals attacked responding officers, seized an AK-47 rifle, and used it to fire indiscriminately, resulting in casualties. Four suspects, Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, Olalere Taiwo, Olalere Ademola, and Bankole Abiodun, were subsequently arrested based on credible intelligence and technical analysis. The arrests reflect the authorities' efforts to address the incident and hold perpetrators accountable. The establishment of the panel follows a public disclosure by the Osun State Police Command, which detailed the nature of the attack and its aftermath. The inquiry aims to provide clarity on the events, ensure justice for the victims, and reinforce the rule of law in the region. As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on uncovering the truth, addressing grievances, and implementing necessary reforms to safeguard public safety and uphold legal standards.
