Abu Dhabi is testing a high-tech AI-powered mattress designed to detect and address sleep apnoea by monitoring breathing patterns and prompting users to change position. Developed through a partnership between the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, and sleep technology company Eight Sleep, the mattress will be used in a 12-week study involving 30 patients with positional sleep apnoea. The device captures physiological data such as heart rate, breathing, and body position, which is integrated into Abu Dhabi’s intelligent health system for analysis. Researchers aim to explore if the mattress can serve as both a diagnostic tool and a treatment option, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional CPAP therapy. Dr. Jethin Rafique, the study's principal investigator, highlighted the potential of AI-driven interventions for patients whose sleep apnoea worsens when lying on their backs.
