Air defense destroyed 79 of 90 UAVs used by Russia to attack Ukraine

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have successfully intercepted 79 out of 90 drones launched by Russia during an attack on the country, according to reports from the Air Force's Telegram channel. The attacks began in the evening of June 18 and continued into the early hours of June 19, targeting multiple regions across Ukraine. Despite the significant number of drones shot down, there were confirmed hits on eight locations, indicating that some of the drones managed to reach their targets. The intercepted drones included various models such as Shahed, "Herb," "Italmas," "Bandera," and others, which were launched from Russian cities including Bryansk, Orel, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and from the temporarily occupied Crimea. The defense efforts involved the air force, anti-aircraft missile units, reconnaissance and electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups within the Ukrainian military.

The ongoing aerial assault has prompted a robust response from Ukrainian forces, who continue to engage the enemy using a combination of traditional and modern defensive measures. As of early morning on June 19, Russian drones remained active in the airspace over Ukraine, highlighting the persistent threat posed by the invasion. This situation underscores the intensity of the conflict, with both sides employing advanced technology and tactics to gain strategic advantages.

In addition to the drone strikes, the southern front of the war has seen increased activity involving specialized Russian units. According to statements made by Vladislav Voloshyn, spokesperson for the Southern Military Group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, a special unit known as "Varangians" from Vladimir Putin’s reserves is actively engaged against Ukrainian forces. This unit is equipped with cutting-edge and experimental Russian drones, including those utilizing fiber-optic cables capable of striking up to 30 kilometers away. These capabilities pose a significant challenge to Ukrainian defenses, requiring continuous adaptation and innovation in countermeasures.

Voloshyn also reported that over the past day, the enemy deployed 2,212 kamikaze drones of various modifications, conducted 163 drops from drones, and used 187 munitions. In addition to these drone-based attacks, the enemy carried out 21 airstrikes using guided bombs, resulting in the use of 63 bombs. Artillery bombardments were frequent, with 381 incidents recorded, involving 1,528 rounds. The combat zone saw 33 engagements, with the most intense activity occurring around Gulyaypole, where the enemy attempted multiple attacks in several populated areas.

The impact of Ukrainian strikes on Russian logistics has been noted as a factor affecting the readiness of the opposing forces. While the frequency of assaults has decreased compared to previous days, this reduction could be attributed to the buildup of forces along certain fronts. Nevertheless, the number of drone attacks and artillery bombardments remains high, and the enemy continues to employ airpower more aggressively than before.
