UP approves 73,184 homes under PMAY-U 2.0 across 137 urban bodies

Uttar Pradesh has approved 73,184 new housing units under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0) initiative, bringing the total number of sanctioned houses under the Beneficiary-Led Individual House Construction (BLC) component to 4,88,526. The approvals were announced during a meeting of the State Level Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (SLSMC), led by Chief Secretary S P Goyal. These approvals span 137 urban local bodies across the state, marking a significant step forward in the government’s efforts to address housing shortages among economically weaker sections. The recent approvals come as part of the broader PMAY-U 2.0 program, which was launched in September 2024. This initiative, known as the ‘Housing for All’ mission for urban India, seeks to support one crore additional urban households in acquiring affordable homes through construction, purchase, or rental. The scheme includes a total investment of Rs 10 lakh crore, with Rs 1.6 lakh crore allocated as central assistance. It operates through four key components, each designed to cater to different segments of the population and varying levels of financial need. Under the BLC component, eligible families from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category receive financial assistance to build their own pucca houses on existing land. The program allows beneficiaries to construct homes with a carpet area ranging from 30 to 45 square meters, adhering to specific guidelines set by the scheme. Additionally, states have the option to grant land rights to landless beneficiaries who qualify under the program. In Uttar Pradesh, this approach has enabled the sanctioning of nearly 4.89 lakh houses under the BLC component so far. Goyal, during the SLSMC meeting, emphasized the importance of ensuring that all newly sanctioned houses are completed within the stipulated timeframes. He instructed officials to maintain high construction standards and quality throughout the process. Timely delivery of homes to beneficiaries was highlighted as a priority, alongside continuous monitoring of ongoing projects to prevent delays. Officials were also directed to regularly assess the progress of sanctioned projects and take corrective measures if necessary. The PMAY-U 2.0 initiative has been expanded to include 5,494 towns and Urban Development Authorities nationwide. This expansion underscores the government’s commitment to addressing housing challenges in both developed and emerging urban areas. For Uttar Pradesh, the latest round of approvals reflects the state’s active participation in the national effort to improve living conditions for low-income families. The focus on beneficiary-led construction ensures that individuals have greater control over the design and location of their homes, aligning with the scheme’s goal of promoting self-reliance and dignity. The state government has also taken steps to streamline the approval process and enhance transparency. By involving multiple urban local bodies, the initiative ensures that housing solutions are tailored to meet the unique needs of different regions.
