Many initiatives in the pipeline to transform tourism sector in Tamil Nadu, say Ministers

Tamil Nadu's government announced a series of transformative initiatives aimed at revitalizing its tourism sector, according to officials speaking at an event in Tiruchi. Tourism Minister S. Rajesh Kumar emphasized the state's vast potential for tourism development during the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI). He noted that Tiruchi alone attracts approximately 2.5 crore visitors annually, highlighting its significance as a key tourist destination within the state. During his address, Mr. Kumar outlined plans to enhance tourism through various avenues, including medical tourism, agricultural tourism, and temple tourism. He mentioned specific projects such as River Tourism linking the Thamirabarani and Cauvery rivers, along with devotional tourism focusing on centers like Velankanni and Nagore. Additionally, the government is exploring the possibility of providing free travel facilities for senior citizens to ensure inclusivity and accessibility in tourism. Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE), S. Ramesh, underscored the pivotal role of travel agents in connecting travelers with diverse cultural experiences across the globe. He praised Tamil Nadu for its rich tapestry of attractions ranging from Chennai to Kanniyakumari, encompassing beaches, temples, historical monuments, heritage sites, and scenic spots. Each district, he explained, offers unique experiences, with Tiruchi showcasing attractions such as Srirangam and Samayapuram temples, Kallanai and Mukkombu dams, and Rockfort. Ramesh emphasized the importance of local culinary traditions in enhancing the tourism experience, citing Srirangam's renowned traditional cuisine, including the famous Akkaravadisal. Major temples such as those in Tiruchendur, Rameswaram, and Tiruvannamalai draw devotees and tourists from across India and beyond. Collaborations between the HR&CE and Tourism departments aim to elevate these attractions further by attracting more visitors both domestically and internationally. The ministers participated in the release of a double diamond jubilee souvenir commemorating the TAAI's anniversary. Key figures present included S.P. Rajendran, Chairman of TAAI - STC, R. Sunil Kumar, National President of TAAI, and D. Venkatesan, Regional Director of Indian Tourism - South. G. Gopalakrishnan, Director of Tiruchi International Airport, was also in attendance. In a separate development, Tamil Nadu witnessed significant investment commitments during the 'Vetri Investment Conclave' held in Chennai. Industries Minister S Keerthana revealed that the state signed 97 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 97 companies, promising investments totaling ₹67,452 crore. These investments are projected to generate 106,998 new jobs across the state. Since assuming office in May 2026, the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government has secured investment promises exceeding ₹1 lakh crore. With the recent MoUs, the total number of MoUs signed stands at 104, amounting to ₹1,02,514 crore, which will create 121,788 new jobs. The conclave featured participation from Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and included minister for industries S Keerthana alongside Deepak Jacob, CEO and Managing Director of Guidance Tamil Nadu, the nodal agency promoting investments. Among the 97 MoUs, the automobile sector led with 16 companies investing ₹16,773 crore, generating 13,475 new jobs. Data center companies followed closely behind with commitments of ₹11,417 crore, creating 1,644 jobs. Textile industry companies accounted for the highest job creation, with 16 firms signing agreements worth ₹7,871 crore, expected to generate 24,876 new positions. Other sectors benefiting from these investments include critical engineering, life sciences, electronics and semiconductor, aerospace and defense, industrial and warehousing, maritime, toys, renewables, and research and development. Of the 97 MoUs, 30 were with foreign-based companies from 16 countries. Australia led in investment commitments with ₹7,125 crore, followed by Germany with ₹4,400 crore, expected to create 1,850 jobs. Japanese companies contributed ₹2,651 crore, anticipated to yield 5,316 new jobs. Investments are distributed across 19 districts, with Kancheepuram receiving 20 new projects valued at ₹31,004 crore, followed by Tirunelveli with ₹15,037 crore in investments. Political parties, including the main opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), criticized the state government regarding these developments. Despite the criticism, the government remains focused on achieving its ambitious goal of reaching a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036.
