66 years of one car: one life, one Mercedes

David Miller, 85, has driven the same Mercedes-Benz 190 SL for 66 years, since December 1960, when he was just 19. The car, a bright blue roadster, has been his constant companion through life’s many chapters: work, travel, marriage, parenthood, and even participation in races. With over 350,000 kilometers, or more than 220,000 miles, on its odometer, the vehicle remains a working automobile rather than a collector’s item. Miller has never sold it, never stored it away, nor has he ever fully restored it. Instead, he has treated it with regular maintenance and practical repairs, ensuring it continues to function reliably. Miller received the car as a gift from his father, Leslie, who had a soft spot for Mercedes despite being a Chevrolet enthusiast. Through his connections with the local Mercedes dealer in Sydney, AMI (Australian Motor Industry Group), Leslie managed to secure the 190 SL for his son. At the time, David had hoped for a more utilitarian vehicle, such as a Ford or Holden, but he soon grew fond of the sporty roadster. His previous vehicle, a Commer light truck, was quickly replaced by the Mercedes, which became a staple of daily life. The car accompanied Miller through his early career, long trips to cities like Melbourne and Perth, and even into married life. When he married Sue in 1969, the Mercedes remained a trusted partner. As their family expanded, adding daughter Sally in 1973, a second Mercedes, a 220 Ponton from 1964, joined the household. Yet, the 190 SL remained his preferred choice. “With the 190 SL I had such good experiences that I stayed loyal to Mercedes,” he recalls. The children alternated between the two cars for school runs, but the open-top roadster always held a special place in the family. Miller’s relationship with the car extended beyond mere transportation. From the mid-1960s onward, he used the 190 SL in racing and performance tests. At Oran Park Raceway, south-west of Sydney, the car served as a pace car with its 105 horsepower. It also regularly appeared at Bathurst events, where it was simply regarded as a used sports car. “No one thought back then that this would become a sought-after classic,” Miller says. The car’s continued use reflected its reliability and the owner’s commitment to keeping it functional. Despite reaching a mileage that would have prompted many vintage vehicles to undergo multiple restorations or be retired, Miller has never considered selling it. “I never thought about selling it,” he explains. “Over time, the car just became part of our lives.” His wife agrees, nodding in quiet affirmation. For Miller, the philosophy has always been simple: repair rather than restore, as long as it works. This approach has paid off, as the car continues to serve him well. Today, the 190 SL remains a symbol of loyalty, resilience, and a unique bond between man and machine. It is not a museum piece, but a living testament to how a car can become more than just a vehicle, it can become a lifelong companion.
