American Gretchen Walsh has broken the world record in the 50-meter freestyle.

American swimmer Gretchen Walsh broke the world record in the women's 50-meter freestyle, achieving a time of 23.55 seconds at a competition in Rome. This improved upon the previous record set by fellow American Katie Ledecky in Indianapolis just nine days earlier. Sweden’s Sarah Sjöström, who held the previous world record, finished second in 23.86 seconds. Walsh and Ledecky were former teammates at the University of Virginia and continue to train together. At 23 years old, Walsh already holds multiple world records, including in the 50-meter butterfly in a short pool.
