30,000 vulnerable Katsina residents benefit from free medical outreach

Over 30,000 vulnerable individuals in Katsina State have recently received free medical care through the efforts of the Dahiru Bara’u Mangal Foundation. This initiative, which began in 2018, has consistently aimed to provide essential health services to those who lack the financial means to access proper medical attention. The latest phase of the program, launched at the General Hospital in Katsina, focuses specifically on hernia and hydrocele surgeries, but also encompasses a broader range of free medical interventions.

The foundation's board member, Hussaini Kabir, revealed that over 700 patients from both within and beyond Katsina State are set to benefit from these surgeries. He emphasized that the program is particularly targeted towards vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and low-income families. According to Kabir, patients are first subjected to thorough screenings to determine their eligibility for either surgery or medication. Those found to have less severe conditions are given free treatment with necessary drugs, ensuring comprehensive care without financial burden.

In addition to the surgical initiatives, the foundation regularly conducts other forms of medical outreach, such as free eye surgeries, urological treatments, and specialized medical procedures. Kabir noted that approximately 2,000 individuals suffering from various eye-related issues are currently undergoing screening and treatment. For those requiring more invasive procedures, the foundation ensures that all costs are covered, allowing these patients to receive the care they need without hesitation.

Dr. Saifullahi Bawale, a local physician, praised the foundation's work, highlighting its significant impact on healthcare accessibility in Katsina. He underscored the availability of skilled professionals, advanced equipment, and sufficient supplies to support the ongoing operations. His comments reflect the community's growing recognition of the foundation's contributions to public health.

Beneficiaries of the program have shared their gratitude, expressing relief and hope following their diagnoses. Malama Zulaihat Adamu, a resident of Jibia Local Government Area, recounted how her son had long struggled to afford hernia surgery. Now, thanks to the foundation's efforts, he stands to receive the treatment he desperately needed. Similarly, Shamsu Abubakar, who is undergoing treatment for an eye condition, expressed optimism about the potential restoration of his vision. Firdausi Muhammad from Batsari Local Government Area echoed these sentiments, calling the medical outreach a vital lifeline for those unable to pay for surgical care.

The ongoing free eye care services at the Katsina Eye Centre further illustrate the breadth of the foundation's reach. Patients are not only assessed for visual impairments but also provided with corrective lenses when necessary. Those identified as needing surgical intervention are scheduled for procedures at no cost, reinforcing the foundation's commitment to equitable healthcare access.
