25 US states are suing Trump over new tariffs

Twenty-five U.S. states, predominantly governed by Democrats, have filed lawsuits against President Donald Trump’s new tariffs imposed on imports from 60 international trade partners, including products from the European Union. The states argue that the tariffs, which range up to 12.5 percent, were introduced under the pretext of investigations into forced labor and constitute unlawful measures aimed at expanding economic control. These tariffs came into effect on July 24 and apply to a wide array of goods, though exceptions exist for items already subject to other tariffs, such as steel and aluminum. The legal action was announced in a court filing released on Monday, with the states accusing the Trump administration of using the investigation into forced labor as a justification for imposing broad and arbitrary tariffs. A spokesperson for the White House stated that the United States uses its legal authority to eliminate unjustifiable actions that harm domestic trade. Kush Desai, a senior official, emphasized that the legal framework used to justify the tariffs is valid and essential for protecting national interests. Among the states leading the lawsuit are California and New York, both of which have voiced concerns over the potential long-term effects of the tariffs on their economies. These states argue that the investigations into forced labor conducted by the administration are not credible and serve as a convenient excuse to implement sweeping tariff policies. They contend that the measures violate established trade laws and undermine the principles of fair competition. The current tariffs represent a strategic shift in the administration's approach to trade policy.
