The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has designated the recently concluded Osun State governorship election as a benchmark for its preparations for the 2027 general election. This decision comes amid ongoing efforts to refine electoral processes and ensure smoother execution of future polls. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made the announcement during a meeting with the Chargé d’Affaires of Canada to Nigeria, David Sproule, who led a delegation from the Canadian High Commission on a courtesy visit to INEC headquarters in Abuja. Amupitan highlighted that the Osun election, held on August 15, showcased notable improvements in several critical areas, including the timely opening of polling units, performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), electronic result transmission, and effective crisis management. According to the INEC chairman, 3,556 out of 3,763 polling units, representing 94.5 percent, opened for accreditation and voting by 8:30 a.m., marking a significant improvement over previous elections. The commission also noted optimal BVAS performance, seamless result uploads on the IReV portal, and proactive handling of challenges that arose during the poll. INEC has used recent off-cycle elections as testing grounds for electoral reforms and operational improvements. These included the Anambra State governorship election, the FCT Area Council elections, and the Ekiti State governorship election. However, the Osun election stands out due to the consistent performance across multiple facets of the electoral process. Amupitan emphasized that the success in Osun should not be considered a final achievement but rather a gold standard guiding preparations for the 2027 elections. INEC has already begun its preparations for the upcoming general election, with the official period for public campaigns and rallies starting on August 19. The commission also participated in the signing of the First National Peace Accord on Issue-Based Campaigns by presidential candidates on August 18 under the auspices of the National Peace Committee. This accord aims to promote peaceful and issue-based political discourse leading up to the 2027 elections. Looking ahead, INEC has outlined five key areas of strategic focus: consolidating technological gains, deepening electoral inclusivity, strengthening institutional capacity and technical support, countering misinformation, and safeguarding electoral integrity. To ensure preparedness, the commission plans to conduct a nationwide mock accreditation exercise in November 2026. This exercise will rigorously test the BVAS and other electoral equipment under field conditions, allowing INEC to identify and address potential operational challenges before the actual election. The scale of the 2027 election requires substantial logistical planning. Amupitan estimated that the commission will need approximately 1.4 million ad-hoc personnel to manage the election across more than 176,000 polling units nationwide. This mobilization represents one of the largest deployments of human resources for a single national operation in Nigeria's history. In response to the growing influence of artificial intelligence in elections, INEC has established a dedicated AI unit. This unit will explore the responsible application of AI in areas such as data management, voter registration, and results transmission, while developing safeguards against its misuse. The commission also plans to attend the Global Conference on Responsible AI and Elections, organized by the United Nations Development Programme and Elections Canada, scheduled for September 9 to 11 in Ottawa. Amupitan requested the Canadian High Commission's assistance in facilitating expedited entry visas for members of the INEC delegation attending the conference. As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, INEC remains committed to enhancing voter participation, ensuring the security of the ballot, and building public trust in the electoral system. The commission's focus on inclusivity includes efforts to deepen electoral access for persons with disabilities, women, and youth. Additionally, INEC seeks to strengthen its institutional capacity and technical support infrastructure to meet the demands of a large-scale election. INEC has confirmed that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on Saturday, January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027. The commission continues to work closely with international partners, including Canada, to ensure the successful implementation of these elections.
