20-year-old worker dies in Veligonda Project tunnel accident

A 20-year-old worker named Montilal Singh died after being injured in an accident at Tunnel-2 of the Veligonda Project in Yeguva Cherlopalli village, located in Dornala mandal of Markapuram district. The incident occurred on the early hours of Monday, approximately 3 a.m., when Singh's head was allegedly struck by a hydraulic machine within the tunnel. He was immediately taken to the government hospital in Dornala and passed away later that morning at 7 a.m. following medical treatment. Singh, originally from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, was employed as a helper and was working the third shift on Sunday night. According to Veligonda Project Superintending Engineer Abutalem, the accident took place nearly 9 km inside the tunnel. He stated that this marks the third fatality since the project began in 2006. Despite the long history of the project, the contractor, Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL), has maintained strict safety protocols for workers over the past two decades. The minister for water resources, Nimmala Ramanaidu, responded to the incident by engaging directly with the project’s Chief Engineer and MEIL representatives to obtain further information. Expressing deep concern over the worker’s death, the minister conveyed his shock and directed authorities to offer full support to Singh’s family. As Singh was unmarried, his parents will receive the insurance and other benefits. The minister also lamented that the accident occurred during the project’s final phase and emphasized the need for heightened attention to worker safety during ongoing tunnel construction activities. The Veligonda Project, situated in Andhra Pradesh, is part of a larger infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and water management systems.
