13-year-old 'raped' by over 12 men for 4 days in Rajasthan; 10 arrested

A 19-year-old laborer in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, is facing charges of sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, 2012, according to local police. The incident reportedly occurred on the pretense of purchasing a kite, and the girl informed her mother about the assault on Friday. Her mother then lodged a formal complaint with the authorities. Following this, the Guntur Superintendent of Police, Vakul Jindal, confirmed that a case was registered against the accused, and a manhunt was initiated to locate the suspect. This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing crimes against children, particularly in rural areas where such incidents often go unreported or are met with social stigma.

In contrast, a separate but equally disturbing case emerged in Rajasthan, where a 13-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly subjected to sexual exploitation by over a dozen individuals over a span of four days. The incident took place in Sri Ganganagar, and the girl had traveled there to visit a friend. Upon arrival, she was allegedly taken to a hotel by an e-rickshaw driver named Rambabu, rather than being returned home as requested. Over the subsequent days, the girl was moved between several establishments, including a hotel known as "Dream" located near Birbal Chowk. During this time, she was reportedly subjected to repeated sexual abuse, and it is alleged that alcohol was administered to her to facilitate the exploitation. The girl was eventually found by police at Hotel Joy Inn on June 22 after her family filed a missing persons report.

Following the recovery of the victim, police have already arrested ten individuals, including hotel owner Mayank Sain, manager Hardeep Nath, and Sachin, who are currently in police custody. Additionally, the e-rickshaw driver Rambabu, along with Mukesh Nath and Lalband Singla, have been placed in judicial custody. Two more suspects, Deepak and Tarun, were recently apprehended. Of these ten arrests, five are believed to have played direct roles in the exploitation. Authorities have also sealed one hotel associated with the case and are conducting a thorough examination of the operations and records of the remaining establishments. Legal action is anticipated if evidence of complicity is uncovered among the hotel staff or management.

The investigation has also yielded crucial information from the mobile devices of the accused, aiding in the identification of additional suspects. A dedicated team of experts, supervised by District Superintendent of Police Harishankar Yadav, is analyzing footage obtained from the DVR systems installed in all four implicated hotels. These efforts are expected to uncover more connections and potentially lead to further arrests. The police have emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety, health, and long-term rehabilitation of the minor, stating that ongoing raids are being conducted to track down any remaining suspects.

Public reaction to the case has been intense, with significant unrest in Sriganganagar. On Saturday, members of the District Congress Committee organized a protest outside the Ganganagar Traders Association building, where participants voiced their discontent with both the police administration and the hotel operators. District Congress President and Srikaranpur MLA Rupinder Singh Kunnar attended the demonstration and called for stringent measures against those responsible for the crime. Such protests underscore the deep-seated societal concerns regarding child protection and the need for stronger enforcement of existing laws.

As both cases unfold, they reflect broader issues related to the vulnerability of minors in certain regions and the systemic failures in safeguarding them. While the legal processes in each instance are distinct, they share common threads—child exploitation, inadequate reporting mechanisms, and the involvement of local businesses in facilitating criminal activities. As investigations continue, the focus remains on holding perpetrators accountable and implementing reforms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
