In a recent case in Uttar Pradesh, a six-year-old girl became a victim of sexual assault, and authorities faced significant challenges in identifying the perpetrator due to the lack of CCTV footage, eyewitnesses, and other forensic evidence. However, a breakthrough came when a trained sniffer dog named Mary played a crucial role in locating the accused within just 48 hours. This case highlights the growing reliance on canine units in solving crimes, particularly those involving children.

The incident occurred in Sambhal, a town in the western part of Uttar Pradesh. The young girl was found in a distressing condition, and initial investigations revealed that there were no witnesses or cameras capturing the crime. As the police struggled to find leads, they decided to deploy Mary, a seven-year-old Labrador retriever known for her exceptional tracking skills. Mary had previously assisted in several complex cases, showcasing her reliability and effectiveness in such situations.

Upon arrival at the scene, Mary was given a scarf recovered from the vicinity of where the girl was found. Within minutes, she began to move through the narrow lanes of the locality, leading the police team to a nearby house. The journey was less than 300 meters, yet it proved instrumental in uncovering the truth. The officers noted that Mary's behavior was unmistakable, indicating that she had identified the scent associated with the crime.

Once at the house, the police discovered that the accused had already fled. A chase ensued, during which the suspect reportedly fired upon the officers. In response, the police managed to subdue him and take him into custody. Following this, a scent identification parade was conducted at the police station, where Mary was exposed to multiple individuals to verify the trail. Her actions confirmed the presence of the accused, leading to his confession and subsequent arrest under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

The successful resolution of the case was celebrated by the local authorities, with Superintendent of Police K K Bishnoi announcing a cash reward of Rs 10,000 for Mary and initiating a formal commendation for her handler. This recognition underscores the importance of trained animals in modern policing strategies, especially in cases involving vulnerable victims.

Meanwhile, another disturbing incident unfolded in Gorakhpur, where a 12-year-old boy allegedly kidnapped his nine-month-old niece and subjected her to sexual assault after viewing explicit material online. The child was found unconscious in a tin shed approximately half a kilometer from her home, having been left by her maternal uncle. The family's search for the child went unnoticed until villagers discovered her in the early morning. The police, upon receiving reports, quickly intervened and hospitalized the child, whose condition remains stable.

This case raises critical concerns about the exploitation of minors and the need for stricter enforcement of laws protecting children.
