NGAn analysis of asylum application data from Ireland reveals that at least 11,040 Nigerians sought asylum in the country between 2013 and 2025, according to data obtained by The Punch. The figures come from annual reports compiled by the Irish Refugee Council for the AIDA project, based on statistics from Ireland’s immigration authorities and Eurostat. While Nigerian applicants fluctuated in numbers over the period, they consistently ranked among the top nationalities applying for asylum, reaching 4,037 in 2024, accounting for 21.7% of all applicants that year. Overall, Nigerians represented at least 13.69% of Ireland’s total asylum applications during this time.
