1000s of Ford Rangers recalled over airbag safety risk

Thousands of Ford Ranger Double Cab vehicles are being recalled due to a potential safety hazard involving the side curtain airbags and B-pillar trim. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued the recall, which affects 2,275 units manufactured for the 2026 and 2027 model years. The issue arises when the side curtain airbag deploys, potentially interacting with the B-pillar trim and preventing proper inflation. In extreme cases, the B-pillar component might detach and become a projectile, posing a serious risk to occupants. The affected vehicles were sold through Ford franchised dealers across South Africa between May 22 and June 23, 2026. Some of these units were also exported to neighboring countries including Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, and Eswatini. Vehicle owners are advised to bring their cars to the nearest authorized Ford dealership for inspection and any required repairs. These services will be conducted free of charge. NCC Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging owners not to delay action. “This recall affects a safety-critical component of a significant number of vehicles,” he stated. “Owners or users of these vehicles should contact the supplier without delay.” The recall comes amid a series of other automotive safety alerts issued by the NCC. Earlier this year, the commission had ordered the recall of 314 Nissan Qashqai vehicles due to a potential fault involving the fuel pipe. Movement of the pipe within its retaining clip could lead to wear and possibly a fuel leak. Additionally, 507 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 vehicles and 124 Lexus LX600 models were recalled because of manufacturing debris in the engine assembly. This debris could cause main bearing failure, resulting in engine knocking, rough operation, difficulty starting, or even stalling. Engine stalling while driving increases the likelihood of accidents. In response to the latest recall, Ford has taken steps to address the concerns raised by the NCC. Dealerships are preparing to conduct inspections and perform necessary repairs at no cost to customers. The company has also been instructed to monitor the progress of the recall and ensure compliance with safety standards.
