Ownership

Politiken is a Copenhagen daily broadsheet founded on 1 October 1884 by Viggo Hørup, Edvard Brandes and Hermann Bing. Since 1 January 2003 it has been published by JP/Politikens Hus A/S, of which A/S Politiken Holding owns half (the other half held via Jyllands-Posten Holding). A/S Politiken Holding is controlled by the private Politiken-Fonden (the Politiken Foundation), which exists to secure the paper's continued existence and independence.

Funding

Commercially financed by subscriptions and a digital paywall, print sales and advertising within JP/Politikens Hus. No party or state subsidy.

Affiliation & stance

Politiken pursues a social-liberal, center-left editorial line; though historically linked to the founding of the Danish Social Liberal Party, it has been formally independent of the party since 1970. Owned by an independent private foundation with no current party or state control, it is classified INDEPENDENT.
