Ownership

Politico was founded in 2007 by Robert Allbritton with Jim VandeHei and John Harris. In 2021 Allbritton sold it to the German media group Axel Springer SE for about $1 billion. Following a 2024-2025 restructuring, Axel Springer's classifieds were split off to KKR/CPPIB while its media assets, including Politico, Business Insider, Bild and Die Welt, remain in a privately held Axel Springer controlled by Mathias Doepfner and Friede Springer.

Funding

Politico is a for-profit commercial operation funded by advertising and events, plus high-value subscriptions to its premium policy service, Politico Pro (and Politico Europe).

Affiliation & stance

Editorially Politico positions itself as nonpartisan, scoop-driven coverage of politics and policy, broadly centrist. It is privately and commercially owned with no party or government control, so it is classified INDEPENDENT (center); the Axel Springer owners' known pro-Atlanticist views are a corporate-parent factor rather than party direction.

Born in the U.S.A.: Protecting the right of birthright citizenship

The article discusses the legal concept of birthright citizenship in the United States, as outlined in the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. It states that anyone born in the U.S., except for children of diplomats or invading forces, is automatically a citizen. Professor Amanda Frost explains that the wording of the amendment leaves little room for interpretation. However, public opinion remains split, with roughly half of Americans supporting granting citizenship to children of undocumented immigrants and the other half opposing it. In January 2025, former President Donald Trump issued an executive order attempting to reinterpret the 14th Amendment to exclude most children of undocumented immigrants from automatic citizenship, but this was blocked by a lower court and is currently under review by the Supreme Court. The article references historical cases such as Dred Scott v. Sandford, where the Supreme Court ruled that Black individuals could not be citizens, leading to the creation of the 14th Amendment. Another landmark case, Wong Kim Ark v. United States, affirmed birthright citizenship for those born in the U.S., including children of immigrants.

One year later, here's who won — and lost — under the OBBBA

One year after President Trump signed the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' (OBBBA), the law's effects on different groups are becoming clearer. The OBBBA extended tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, preserving the top individual tax rate at 37% for high-income earners, benefiting those making over $640,000 individually or $768,000 jointly. It also reduced federal spending on programs like Medicaid and food stamps to fund these tax cuts. While Republicans praise the law for economic relief and long-term growth, Democrats argue it disproportionately benefits the wealthy by cutting support for vulnerable populations. The analysis highlights varying impacts based on income, age, and reliance on federal aid, with some provisions taking effect later in 2026.

Cristiano Ronaldo Honors Diogo Jota After Portugal World Cup Win vs Croatia

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal secured a 2-1 victory against Croatia in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a significant milestone in the tournament. The win carried added emotional weight as it coincided with the one-year anniversary of the tragic car crash that killed Diogo Jota, a key member of the Portugal squad, along with his brother André Silva. Jota had previously played 49 matches for Portugal, scoring 14 goals and winning two UEFA Nations League titles, and was a standout player for Liverpool. Following the match, Portugal honored Jota by wearing his No. 21 jersey during the post-game ceremony, and Ronaldo expressed deep emotion while donning the jersey. He shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, dedicating the win to Jota and Portugal. The match saw key moments including a goal by Croatia’s Ivan Perišić, Ronaldo’s equalizer via a penalty, and a decisive header by Gonçalo Ramos in extra time.

Burnham Vows to Grow Economy by Taking Powers Out of London

Andy Burnham has stated his intention to significantly transfer fiscal authority from the UK Parliament in Westminster if he becomes the leader of the Labour Party and subsequently wins the position of prime minister. This pledge comes amid discussions around greater autonomy for regions within the United Kingdom, particularly highlighting the potential shift of economic decision-making power away from central governance. Burnham's proposal suggests a move toward decentralization, which could impact how economic policies are formulated and implemented across different parts of the country. The statement reflects broader debates about the balance of power between national and regional governments in the UK.

Lead Iran negotiator tells allies Tehran will go to war again if U.S. does not fulfill commitments

Iran's parliament speaker and chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned allies China and Belarus that Iran would consider resuming hostilities if the U.S. fails to uphold commitments outlined in a recent memorandum of understanding. This statement came during meetings in Tehran with delegations from China and Belarus, who were present for the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Ghalibaf emphasized Iran's expectation of non-interference by the U.S. in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route previously disrupted by conflict. He also discussed strengthening economic ties with China, highlighting its role as a major buyer of Iranian oil and a potential strategic ally. Recent tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated after an attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to reciprocal military actions before both sides agreed to de-escalate and hold indirect talks in Doha.

Team Trump squares up to rip Red and Blue critics of Iran peace deal

The Trump administration faces criticism from both Republicans and Democrats in Congress over a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Iran aimed at ending hostilities and advancing broader negotiations. Critics argue the deal represents a significant concession to Iran, including provisions for the release of frozen Iranian assets and funding for Iran's reconstruction, which they compare unfavorably to the 2015 nuclear deal under former President Barack Obama. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-La.) called the MOU 'the worst foreign policy blunder in decades,' while Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) accused the administration of betraying Israel. Democratic senators such as Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey have also criticized the deal, with Warren comparing it to the Obama-era agreement and Markey demanding congressional rejection. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has been vocal in opposing the deal, describing it as 'the art of surrender.' The 2015 law requiring congressional review of agreements involving Iran's nuclear program may provide a legislative avenue for challenging the MOU.

Trump’s Mass Deportation Effort Comes For Operative Tied To Hasan Piker’s Pro-Cuba Propaganda

Federal authorities arrested Carlos Antonio Lloga Dominguez, a Cuban national accused of working for the Communist Cuban regime's influence group ICAP, which is linked to Havana's intelligence operations. The U.S. State Department revoked his immigration status under the Trump administration, citing his role in promoting anti-American propaganda and supporting Cuban communist interests. His family members were also detained. ICAP, described by the State Department as a major player in a global communist influence network, has connections to former Cuban spies and has collaborated with leftist U.S. groups like the People’s Forum and Code Pink. Federal agencies, including the DOJ and Treasury, are investigating these groups for alleged coordination with Cuban officials, with specific attention to figures such as Hasan Piker, Medea Benjamin, and Olivia DiNucci.

Ex-USMNT Coach Defends Christian Pulisic Amid World Cup Criticism

Christian Pulisic, a key player for the United States men's national soccer team (USMNT), has been dealing with a recurring calf injury that affected his performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He initially injured his calf in training and reaggravated it during the team's opening match against Paraguay. This led to his absence from the game against Australia and limited his impact in subsequent matches. Despite returning to the starting lineup, Pulisic has struggled to regain his form, drawing criticism for his reduced involvement in the USMNT's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Former USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter suggested the issue is tactical rather than due to Pulisic's performance, emphasizing the need for better ball distribution to utilize his skills effectively. Pulisic addressed the pressure surrounding his performance, highlighting the importance of his support system in managing stress. With the USMNT facing Belgium in the Round of 16, Pulisic's role becomes crucial, especially after teammate Folarin Balogun received a red card and will be ineligible for the next match.

When a World Cup exit becomes a political crisis

The article discusses how the poor performance of South Korea's national football team in the World Cup has triggered significant political fallout. President Lee Jae Myung criticized the appointment of head coach Hong Myung-bo, accusing the Korea Football Association (KFA) of favoritism and cronyism in selecting him despite procedural violations. A government audit confirmed flaws in the hiring process but ruled out any wrongdoing by Hong personally. Public anger has focused on Hong, leading to calls for reform in sports administration. The controversy highlights broader issues of transparency and accountability in South Korea's sports governance, aligning with President Lee's agenda to promote openness in public institutions.

Could Switzerland find a winning XI out of 10 million?

The article discusses the intersection of Swiss politics and soccer, focusing on the recent referendum on limiting population growth to 10 million by 2050. This initiative, backed by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, aimed to impose stricter immigration controls once the population reached 9.5 million. The referendum occurred shortly after the start of the World Cup, during which Switzerland's national team featured 16 out of 26 players with foreign ancestry, making it one of the most ethnically diverse squads. The proposal was rejected by 55% of voters, highlighting the ongoing debate over immigration and multiculturalism in Switzerland. The country's direct democracy system allows such issues to be decided by citizens, reflecting broader societal tensions.

The Croatian team’s favorite singer is a fascist salute away from the mainstream

The article discusses the popularity of Marko Perković, known as Thompson, among Croatian sports fans, particularly during international competitions. His song 'Lijepa Li Si' has become an unofficial anthem for the Croatian national team, despite its association with the Ustashe regime, a fascist group responsible for war crimes during World War II. Thompson's music includes references to 'Za dom spremni,' a salute used by the Ustashe, which has led to bans on his concerts in several European countries. Despite controversy, Thompson remains widely supported in Croatia, with large crowds attending his concerts and his presence being celebrated during major sporting events. The article highlights how Croatia, along with other post-communist nations, has reinterpreted historical figures and symbols, often elevating former nationalist leaders into national icons.
