Ownership

Egypt Independent began in 2009 as the English-language edition of the privately owned daily Al-Masry Al-Youm and launched its own print weekly in 2011 before the print operation was shut down in 2013, after which it continues as a website. It is published by the Al-Masry Media Corporation / Al-Masry Establishment for Press, Printing and Publishing, founded in 2004 by businessman Salah Diab and Hisham Kassem. The parent company's board has included prominent Egyptian businessmen, notably billionaire Naguib Sawiris (founder of Orascom/Mobinil), who held shares before exiting in the mid-2010s.

Funding

Financed commercially through advertising and circulation revenue of the Al-Masry Al-Youm group, backed by its private business owners; it receives no state budget.

Affiliation & stance

Privately and commercially owned, controlled by Egyptian businessmen rather than the state or a party, which is why it is classed INDEPENDENT and is regarded as relatively less government-controlled than Egypt's state press. Its English-language editorial line is broadly centrist/liberal, though it operates within Egypt's restrictive media environment.

Sudan's RSF closes in on Al Obeid as UN warned of imminent atrocities

Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, is advancing toward Al Obeid in the North Kordofan region, which is currently held by the Sudanese army. The city has experienced significant disruptions due to RSF drone strikes targeting both military and civilian infrastructure, including the main power station, leading to power outages, water shortages, and hospital operations being affected. Residents report that life remains mostly normal despite these challenges, though fuel shortages persist after attacks on gas stations. Videos circulating online show RSF fighters claiming they will capture Al Obeid within days. Al Obeid is strategically important as it houses the army's 5th Infantry Division and serves as a major commercial hub. Losing this city would be a significant setback for the army, similar to their previous loss of El Fasher in Darfur, which led to widespread atrocities by the RSF. In response, multiple countries, including Norway, Britain, France, and Germany, have raised concerns at the UN Human Rights Council, warning of potential large-scale atrocities if the RSF escalates its assault on Al Obeid.

Ukraine reports two dead after night attacks by Russia, with the death toll in Kiev rising to 30.

At least two people were killed and eight injured in Russian air strikes on the Sumy region and Kryvyj Rih in Ukraine during the night of Thursday to Friday, according to Ukrainian authorities. This follows a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv earlier in the week which killed at least 30 people and injured around 100 others. In response to the attacks, Ukraine conducted missile strikes on Belgorod in Russia, causing a fire at an energy facility and killing one woman, according to Russian media. The overnight strike on the city of Romny in the Sumy region hit a residential building, killing two women and injuring a man, reported regional administrator Oleh Hryhorov via Telegram. Another seven people were injured in a missile strike on Kryvyj Rih, according to military city administrator Oleksandr Vilkul. In Kyiv, teams discovered three more dead bodies during the night, bringing the total number of victims to 30, according to Reuters citing Ukrainian health authorities. Kyiv's military administrator Tymur Tkačenko stated that the attack injured 99 people. Moscow claimed the extensive attack was a response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including those carried

In the tropical Pacific, El Niño conditions have set in, researchers say.

The article reports that researchers from New Zealand’s Earth Sciences organization (ESNZ) have identified conditions consistent with the El Niño climate phenomenon in the tropical Pacific. They warn that impacts on New Zealand’s weather are likely to intensify over the coming months. The ESNZ joined other organizations in Australia, Japan, and the U.S. in confirming the development of El Niño, which is expected to reach strong intensity between July and September. The effects are projected to peak during the Southern Hemisphere summer, spanning late 2023 into early 2024. According to lead researcher Chris Brandolini, this El Niño event is at least comparable in strength to five of the strongest recorded El Niños in modern history. The article outlines regional rainfall expectations, noting potential below-average precipitation in some areas and above-normal levels in others. It also mentions possible temperature fluctuations and increased wind variability later in the year. Additionally, it notes two lower-probability risks: sudden stratospheric warming and the occurrence of a tropical cyclone outside the typical season, both historically linked to El Niño. Putin recognizes the oil map for the first time

Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged for the first time that Russia is building 'some oil reserves' during a meeting focused on energy issues. He emphasized the need to strengthen domestic oil production and increase output. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continued their attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, detonating an oil purification plant in the southern Krasnodar region, which produces around four million tons of crude oil annually. The Krasnodar region is one of Russia's largest oil-producing areas located near the Black Sea. On Tuesday, Ukrainian forces launched large-scale air strikes on Sevastopol, the largest city on Crimea, including attacks on oil facilities. In response, Russia, which annexed Crimea in 2014, has restricted fuel sales to the public to counteract the energy shortages. According to reports, these attacks have had no impact on the front line. During an interview with a Russian state television station, Putin described the Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure as an attempt to destabilize Russian society. He stated that Ukraine's goal was to halt the deployment of Russian military units to improve their position in arms control talks.

Video: Why Egypt team manager Ibrahim Hassan clashed with US hotel security

An Egyptian national football team source has denied reports of a serious conflict between team director Ibrahim Hassan and a U.S. hotel security guard during their stay in Dallas, Texas. The incident, which occurred while the team prepared for their 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Australia, involved a brief disagreement over how security handled interactions with Egyptian fans. According to the source, the security personnel were overly aggressive in preventing fans from taking commemorative photos with players, prompting Hassan to intervene. The source described the situation as minor and already resolved, with no escalation or crossing of boundaries. The team remains focused on their upcoming crucial Round of 32 match, where a win would secure their place in the Round of 16. Egypt qualified for the knockout stage as group runners-up, while Australia also advanced through similar standings.

Egypt’s tourism sector continues its upward trajectory, seeking new phase beyond beaches and resorts

Egypt's tourism industry has experienced significant growth in recent years, with visitor numbers rising from approximately 13 million in 2019 to 19 million in the previous year, according to government data. This expansion has made tourism one of Egypt's most vital economic sectors, contributing substantially to employment and national revenue. Factors driving this success include increased low-cost air travel from Europe, growing interest from airlines and tour operators, and Egypt's favorable climate and diverse attractions. The report highlights that Egypt's tourism offering has evolved beyond traditional beach resorts to include eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and community-based initiatives. Notable developments include the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum and efforts by local businesses to promote experiential tourism, which aims to showcase various facets of Egyptian life and support local communities. 1,000 dead and counting: Shocking heatwave toll threatens to topple French government

France is experiencing a severe heatwave that has resulted in at least 1,000 excess deaths since early June, according to the National Public Health Agency. In response, Green Party lawmakers, along with some members of the far-left France Unbowed (LFI) and Socialist parties, have filed a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's government, criticizing its handling of the crisis. However, the motion is unlikely to pass due to insufficient parliamentary support, particularly as the National Rally (RN) and the Socialist Party have not endorsed it. The government has defended its actions, stating that political opponents are exaggerating the situation. With another heatwave expected soon, the government continues to face scrutiny over its response to the ongoing crisis.

Gold ounce will not drop below $4,000 until the end of 2026: World Gold Council

According to Andrew Naylor, Head of Middle East and Public Policy at the World Gold Council, gold prices are expected to remain above $4,000 per ounce until the end of 2026, fluctuating within a ±5% range around the $4,100 mark in the short term. Factors influencing this outlook include global interest rate expectations, particularly the Federal Reserve's decisions, inflation levels, and the strength of the U.S. dollar. Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, including the war in the Middle East, gold's traditional role as a safe-haven asset remains intact, though investor behavior has become more diversified. In Q1 2026, gold prices averaged $4,873 per ounce, reaching a peak of $5,405 due to geopolitical tensions, inflation, and strong demand from central banks. Global demand for gold rose by 2% year-on-year to 1,231 tonnes in Q1 2026, with the value of demand hitting a record $193 billion. While gold ETFs saw temporary outflows amid shifting interest rate expectations, institutional investors continue to view gold as a long-term hedge against economic uncertainty.
