Ownership & classification
Founded: 1920
Ownership
The Chosun Ilbo (whose English edition is english.chosun.com) was founded in Seoul on 5 March 1920. Since the colonial era it has been controlled by the Bang family, who run it through the privately held Chosun Media Group. The chairman is Bang Sang-hoon, a descendant of the founding-proprietor lineage from Bang Eung-mo, and the family retains majority control of the company.
Funding
It is a commercial newspaper financed by advertising, print and digital subscriptions/circulation, and other Chosun Media Group ventures; it receives no state subsidy.
Affiliation & stance
Chosun Ilbo is South Korea's largest-circulation daily and a flagship conservative outlet, broadly aligned with the political right and successive conservative governments on editorial matters, but it is privately owned by the Bang family with no party or state ownership. Because it is family-controlled commercial media free of party or government control, it is classed INDEPENDENT (with a clear RIGHT/conservative lean, consistent with the site's guess).
