Zoo elephants are surviving far longer today than they were six decades ago, according to a new international study showing substantial improvements in their life expectancy. Published in Scientific Reports, the research led by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) in partnership with Species360, the University of Southern Denmark, and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology reveals that modern zoo elephants now live longer than their counterparts in the wild and semi-wild environments. Researchers divided the data into two periods: 1960–1992 and 1992–2024. Major shifts in elephant management practices occurred after 1992, coinciding with the introduction of stricter standards and enhanced care protocols. As a result, survival rates among zoo elephants have risen sharply, matching or even surpassing those observed in wild populations. Improvements in elephant care have played a crucial role in this shift. Since the 1990s, zoos have adopted more sophisticated methods to enhance the well-being of captive elephants. These advancements include creating larger, more complex enclosures that better mimic natural habitats, using softer sand flooring to reduce joint stress, providing diverse vegetation and enrichment activities to stimulate mental engagement, allowing regular bathing opportunities, and carefully managing social groupings to reflect natural herd structures. Veterinary care has also advanced significantly, with greater emphasis on preventive health measures and specialized treatments. These developments have been largely driven by the international zoo community, which has worked collaboratively to establish and refine best practice guidelines. Organizations such as the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in the United States have continuously updated their recommendations since 2001. In addition, national regulations such as the UK’s Secretary of State’s Standards of Modern Zoo Practice, introduced in 2012, have set specific requirements for elephant housing and care, further elevating the quality of conditions available to zoo residents. The study highlights that while the benefits of these improvements are evident, the long-term impact of these changes will take many more years to fully materialize. Given the slow reproductive rate and extended lifespans of elephants, the full extent of how these enhancements affect population dynamics and overall survival remains to be seen. However, the researchers emphasize that the current trajectory suggests a positive trend that could continue as more zoos adopt similar high-standard practices. Fiona Sach, a study author from ZSL, noted that the marked increase in survival rates reflects broader improvements in husbandry, veterinary care, and population management. She stressed that ongoing monitoring of both survival and general welfare is vital to sustaining these gains. Hannah Jenkins, a co-author and conservation data lead at Species360, added that the consistency and standardization of survival records across over 100 countries made this research possible. The ZIMS system allowed scientists to trace survival trends over 64 years, offering valuable insights that inform both scientific understanding and policy decisions aimed at protecting elephant populations.
