Nigeria's stock market closed higher for the week, driven primarily by robust performances in the banking and consumer goods sectors. According to reports, the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) market capitalization increased by N613 billion, reaching N157.057 trillion from N156.444 trillion the previous week. This marked a 0.39 percent rise in the overall market value despite a slight dip in the NGX All-Share Index (ASI), which fell by 0.14 percent to close at 243,462.13 points from 243,798.76 points the prior week. The financial services industry emerged as the dominant force in the market, with 2.006 billion shares valued at N99.697 billion traded in 96,171 deals. These transactions accounted for 71.17 percent of the total equity volume and 54.63 percent of the total value traded. The consumer goods sector followed closely, with 178.863 million shares worth N7.872 billion exchanged in 26,637 deals. Meanwhile, the oil and gas industry saw 151.237 million shares valued at N38.309 billion traded in 16,879 deals. Investors showed a preference for fundamentally strong stocks, particularly in the banking and consumer goods sectors, after recent price corrections offered more attractive entry points. Institutional investors capitalized on these opportunities, leading to a resurgence in trading activity. Analysts observed that this trend reflected renewed interest in blue-chip stocks, which are typically considered safer investments amidst economic uncertainty. The top three equities by trading volume, First Holdco Plc, FCMB Group Plc, and Access Holdings Plc, accounted for 939.402 million shares worth N57.673 billion in 19,051 deals. Together, they contributed 33.33 percent of the total equity volume and 31.60 percent of the total value traded. This concentration of trading activity underscored the dominance of major players in the market. Despite the overall positive sentiment, there were mixed results across different indices. While several indices posted gains, others such as the NGX Main Board, NGX Consumer Goods, NGX Oil and Gas, NGX Lotus II, NGX Industrial Goods, NGX Growth, and NGX Sovereign Bond indices experienced declines ranging from 0.09 percent to 6.26 percent. The NGX Commodity Index remained flat throughout the week. Trading activity saw a decrease compared to the previous week, with 2.819 billion shares valued at N182.499 billion exchanged in 226,729 deals. This represented a drop from the 3.648 billion shares worth N220.568 billion traded in the preceding week. Market breadth also weakened, with 44 equities advancing compared to 60 in the previous week, while 35 equities declined from 28 the week before. Among the gainers, First Holdco, Thomas Wyatt Nigeria, Fidelity Bank, Learn Africa, and United Bank for Africa saw increases of N26.75, 66 kobo, N2.85, N1.30, and N4.50, respectively. On the other hand, BUA Cement, Red Star Express, International Energy Insurance, C&I Leasing, and PZ Cussons Nigeria faced the steepest declines, losing N64.60, N4.55, 84 kobo, 85 kobo, and N9.05, respectively. In addition to these developments, the NGX announced that 13.812 billion additional ordinary shares of 50 kobo each of Sterling Financial Holdings Company Plc were admitted to its Daily Official List on 16 July. This move is expected to enhance the company’s issued share capital and potentially influence future trading dynamics. Looking ahead, analysts suggest that the market's trajectory will be shaped by the release of second-quarter corporate earnings, especially within the banking sector, along with developments in the global oil market, changes in fixed-income yields, and monetary policy expectations. Investors are advised to keep an eye on foreign portfolio inflows, exchange rate stability, and inflation data to gauge the sustainability of the current market rally. If earnings meet or surpass expectations, the NGX might continue its upward movement as institutional investors shift towards fundamentally sound sectors.
