The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has warned that the ongoing El Niño phenomenon could exacerbate an already dire climate crisis, calling the planet “a world already ablaze.” His remarks come amid rising sea temperatures, intensified wildfires, and extreme weather patterns that have gripped multiple regions globally. According to recent assessments, the current El Niño event is among the strongest in over 150 years, with projections indicating that the coming months will see unprecedented heat levels and shifting precipitation patterns. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued its latest seasonal forecast, predicting that El Niño will dominate global weather systems during the period from August through October. The organization notes that this climatic anomaly, combined with record-high ocean temperatures, is likely to push global average temperatures even higher than those recorded in 2024—the hottest year on record. Sea surface temperatures in key monitoring areas are currently exceeding previous records by more than 2.9 degrees Celsius, with some models suggesting they could rise further, reaching up to 3.4 degrees above normal by late October. This would surpass the intensity of past major El Niño events, including those in 1997–98, 2015–16, and 2023–24. Guterres emphasized that the effects of El Niño are not just regional but global, warning that the phenomenon is intensifying and contributing to worsening conditions worldwide. “El Niño is not just knocking at our door, it’s already inside, turning up the heat,” he stated. “It is adding fuel to a planet already on fire, with scorching heatwaves, apocalyptic wildfires, and record-breaking ocean temperatures.” He called for urgent action to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, stressing that continued emissions would lead to an even more dangerous future. In Europe, particularly in southern regions, the situation has become increasingly severe. A series of intense wildfires, described as “apocalyptic” by Guterres, have been fueled by prolonged droughts and unseasonal high temperatures. These fires are part of a broader pattern of extreme weather events linked to both human-induced climate change and natural climatic cycles such as El Niño. Meanwhile, in parts of Asia and Africa, similar conditions have led to heightened risk of forest fires and water shortages. The combination of El Niño and other climatic factors, such as the positive Indian Ocean Dipole, is expected to increase the likelihood of droughts, floods, and wildfires in certain regions. The positive Indian Ocean Dipole involves warmer-than-average waters in the western part of the Indian Ocean and cooler-than-normal temperatures in the east. This pattern can amplify regional extremes, leading to drier conditions in some areas and heavier rainfall in others. The tropical Atlantic is also projected to remain unusually warm throughout the season, potentially influencing hurricane activity and storm tracks. Meteorologists warn that these conditions will continue to place immense pressure on ecosystems, agriculture, and communities around the globe. With temperatures set to reach new highs and precipitation patterns becoming more erratic, the need for adaptive strategies, such as improved disaster preparedness, sustainable resource management, and international cooperation, is greater than ever. Scientists stress that while natural variability plays a role, the accelerating pace of climate change means that the impacts of these phenomena are unlikely to subside soon.
