Silbermedaille für einen slowenischen Schüler bei den Mitteleuropäischen Mathematikolympiaden

A Slovenian high school student has won a silver medal at the 20th Central European Mathematical Olympiad (MEMO 2026), held in Celje. Primož Markovič, a student at Bežigrad Gymnasium, scored 26 out of 32 possible points, securing second place among participants. The competition took place in August 2026, with the final ceremony held at the National House in Celje. Six Slovenian students participated, including Markovič, who was recognized for his outstanding performance. Other notable Slovenian competitors included Bart Cimperšek fromŠkofja Loka Classical Gymnasium, Gabriel Pagliaruzzi from the Second Gymnasium in Maribor, and Jernej Starčič from Bežigrad Gymnasium, all of whom received commendations for their achievements. The competition featured problems divided into four areas: algebra, combinatorics, geometry, and number theory. Participants were required to apply theoretical knowledge to arrive at practical, innovative solutions. According to the Society of Mathematicians, Physicists, and Astronomers of Slovenia, six gold medals were awarded to competitors who achieved either 32 or 31 points, while 13 silver and 13 bronze medals were given out. In the team category, the Czech Republic claimed gold, Poland secured silver, and Germany took bronze. A total of 55 male and five female competitors participated in the team event. Markovič described his preparation for the competition as primarily self-directed, focusing on problem-solving sessions at home and on Fridays at the university. He emphasized enjoying the experience, meeting new people, and not placing too much emphasis on results. Starčič highlighted the satisfaction of solving complex problems after extensive effort, noting that even challenging tasks could be enjoyable. Luka Horjak, president of this year's organizing committee, commended all participants for their efforts. He acknowledged that while some might be dissatisfied with their results, the importance lay in giving their best and learning from mistakes. Horjak stressed that failures and how individuals cope with them often have a more lasting impact than immediate successes. He encouraged participants to view the competition as an opportunity to grow and improve as mathematicians. The MEMO 2026 served as a preparatory event for the upcoming International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which will take place in Hungary next year. This year’s competition aimed to provide students with valuable experience and insight into international mathematical challenges. The event underscored the growing prominence of Central Europe in fostering young talent in mathematics and highlighted the collaborative spirit among participating countries.
