According to library director Michelle Hudson, the book likely went missing several years after the library’s founding. At the time, strict borrowing rules required proof of literacy for borrowers and limited families to lending no more than three books, provided they had at least six members who could read. These rules have since changed, with modern libraries no longer requiring such documentation. Simmons, the homeowner, believes his ancestor John Simmons, who lived in the house around the time the book would have been borrowed, might have taken it. He estimates that the book could have been lost during a period when the family was still living in the area, though he admits there is little evidence to support this theory. “I think so,” he said. “There were probably too many children for him to take care of.” The book’s return has prompted a renewed interest in the library’s early history. Hudson noted that while the library once allowed books to be loaned out under specific conditions, it will now keep the volume permanently in its archives. “We won’t allow it to go back into circulation again,” she said. “We don’t want to wait another 150 years for someone to return it.” To commemorate the rare find, the library plans to display the book in its local history collection, where it will tell the unusual story of a book that spent nearly half a century in hiding.
