His death marks the 179th journalist killed in Mexico since 2000, according to Article 19, an organization dedicated to defending freedom of expression. Oaxaca has emerged as one of the deadliest states for journalists, with 16 victims recorded so far. Governor Salomón Jara condemned the killing, expressing condolences to Leyva’s family and the broader journalism community. He described the journalist as a “critical” figure within his administration, acknowledging that criticism is part of the profession but rejecting the justification of violence against the press.
