RI updates regulation to protect health workers after doctor death

The Indonesian government is updating regulations to enhance the safety and security of medical and healthcare workers following the death of Dr. Eliza Priscila Utami Pakaenoni, who died by suicide in June 2026 in North Central Timor District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). An investigation found that the doctor faced alleged verbal intimidation from a local council member, which contributed to her severe depression. While her medical care followed proper procedures, there was poor coordination among healthcare facilities, the Health Office, and local authorities. The Ministry of Health emphasized that healthcare workers have the legal right to refuse service if facing violence or harassment, except in emergencies. The investigation, ordered by the Minister of Health and the governor of East Nusa Tenggara, has been handed over to the police for further criminal proceedings. The acting inspector general criticized the passive response of hospital security during the incident and urged the public to report issues through official channels like the Halo Kemenkes hotline and a new whistleblowing system.
