The baits resemble small pieces of green ravioli encased in a packet and contain a vaccine that is intended to be ingested by raccoons and skunks. These animals are primary carriers of rabies in urban environments, making them key targets for the vaccination drive. According to recent data, there have been 171 confirmed cases of raccoon rabies this year alone, with two of those cases involving cats. Additionally, seven instances of bat rabies have been identified, including one case in Montreal detected in late July. The distribution process involves workers manually placing the baits in strategic locations within the targeted parks. Each bait is designed to attract the attention of raccoons and skunks due to its scent and appearance. Officials emphasize that the vaccine is safe for these animals once consumed, offering protection against the virus without posing a risk to human health. Public health authorities are urging residents to exercise caution when encountering the baits. They recommend avoiding direct contact with the packets and using gloves or a shovel if removal becomes necessary. After handling any bait, individuals are advised to thoroughly wash their hands to minimize potential exposure risks. The campaign comes amid growing concerns over the spread of rabies in the region, particularly following the detection of multiple cases among local wildlife. Authorities stress the importance of preventing the disease from reaching domestic animals and humans, as rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. In nearby Peterborough, Lakelands Public Health has launched a separate initiative promoting access to affordable rabies vaccinations for pet owners.
