Philippine Airlines has chosen GE Aerospace’s GEnx-1B engines to power its upcoming fleet of 15 Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner aircraft, with options to acquire five additional units. The agreement was announced on July 21, 2026, during an official signing ceremony. The decision marks a continuation of Philippine Airlines’ longstanding partnership with GE Aerospace, which spans over half a century. The move is part of the airline’s broader strategy to modernize its widebody fleet and enhance its international connectivity. The GEnx-1B engines will be used to power the new 787-10 aircraft, which are designed for long-haul routes and feature advanced aerodynamics and fuel-efficient technologies. Philippine Airlines, the Philippines’ national carrier, currently operates a mix of aircraft powered by both GE Aerospace and CFM International engines. These include the GE90 engines on its Boeing 777-300ER fleet and CFM56-5B engines on its Airbus A320s, with a combined total of 52 engines in service. The airline has expressed confidence that the GEnx engines will improve operational efficiency and passenger comfort. Mohamed Ali, President and CEO of GE Aerospace Commercial Engines & Services, emphasized the significance of the deal, stating that the selection of the GEnx engine underscores the trust placed in GE Aerospace’s technological capabilities and support infrastructure. He noted that the GEnx engine has achieved a 99.98% dispatch reliability rate, significantly outperforming competitors in terms of in-aircraft availability. Additionally, the engine has demonstrated superior performance in extreme environmental conditions, thanks to recent upgrades such as enhanced high-pressure turbine blades and improved combustor coatings. These improvements have extended the engine’s time on wing by more than double in harsh climates compared to previous models. Lucio C. Tan III, President and COO of PAL Holdings, Inc., highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, saying it aligns with the company’s vision to expand its international presence while maintaining high standards of service. The GEnx-1B engine has already accumulated over 50 million flight hours since its introduction, reaching this milestone in less than 14 years, a record for a GE Aerospace commercial widebody engine. This achievement highlights the engine’s durability and consistent performance across diverse operational scenarios.
