The law firm Senica & Partners has reached the brink of insolvency, with financial reports indicating it owes nearly one million euros to the state. The firm’s accounts have been blocked for over 60 consecutive days, prompting speculation in business registers about potential insolvency. According to recent data from Siol, the firm was among the most successful legal practices in Slovenia in 2025, reporting revenue of 8.5 million euros last year, a sharp increase from 3.1 million euros in 2020. With 23 employees, the firm generated a profit of 1.2 million euros in 2023, more than doubling its earnings from the previous year. Despite these figures, the firm faces serious financial difficulties. Katarina Kresal, a former minister of justice and lawyer, holds a 55.5 percent stake in the firm, while other major shareholders include Miro Senic (22 percent), Uroš Čop (9 percent), and several others, including Petra Plevnik, Eva Rop, daughter of former Prime Minister Anton Rop, and Katarina Mervič, each holding 4.5 percent. Despite the firm's profitability, it appears to be struggling with liquidity issues. Publicly available records show that three of its transaction accounts have been frozen since early May, leaving only a special fiduciary account open. This month alone, the firm has closed seven accounts, with three still active abroad. The prolonged blockage of funds has triggered concerns about the firm’s solvency. A credit rating assessment notes that the subject “has severe problems with blocked assets,” citing the criteria set by the ZFPPIPP regulation. According to this, the firm meets the conditions for insolvency due to persistent illiquidity following the blocking of transaction accounts under Article 14, second paragraph, first subsection, point 2 of the regulation. The firm operates from a building located on Barjanska Street in Ljubljana. The property, which was in the firm’s ownership as of October 2025, is now held by the company Asprina, established by the firm in July 2025. On May 4, 2026, 15 mortgages were recorded against the parcel, and this number has since risen to 21. On April 1, 2026, the firm celebrated its 40th anniversary, an event attended by notable figures, including representatives of Raiffeisen Landesbank Kärnten, a bank with mortgages totaling 5.8 million euros on the property. Also present were members of the Brinšek family, whose companies are known for high-interest loans. The firm’s subsidiary, Grad. In, which is owned by the brothers Brinšek, has mortgages valued at 950,000 euros on the property. In addition to private lenders, the state is also a creditor. Mortgages on the property amount to almost one million euros (932,770.3 euros). Although the firm has agreed to make regular payments to the Financial Administration, it is not listed among tax debtors. However, the accumulation of mortgages raises questions about whether they reflect the firm’s actual financial condition. When contacted, the firm responded with a statement that did not directly address the queries raised. The statement emphasized that the firm’s primary challenge lies in unpaid tax obligations, asserting that the tax authority incorrectly classified the firm’s relationships with its partners as an independent contractual relationship, despite failing to meet the necessary legal and procedural requirements. The firm claims that this misclassification led to unlawful decisions regarding taxes and social contributions.
