A newly identified species of leafless flowering plant, dubbed Thismia daemona or the "devil flower," has been discovered in Thong Pha Phum National Park in western Thailand. Researchers from Chulalongkorn University and Prince of Songkla University made the finding during botanical surveys in the region. The plant, which lacks chlorophyll and relies on underground fungi for sustenance, grows nearly entirely hidden beneath leaf litter on the forest floor. Its unusual appearance, characterized by a predominantly black hue, horn-like appendages, and vivid red-orange markings, has led scientists to assign it the evocative name "devil flower." The discovery marks the 16th documented species of Thismia in Thailand, according to the study published in the open-access journal PhytoKeys. The plant was found at an elevation of nearly 1,000 meters (3,300 feet), which is higher and drier than typical habitats for Thismia, usually found in perpetually humid lowland rainforests. This location represents a significant shift in the known geographic distribution of the Thismia section Geomitra, which had previously been recorded only in Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra. The presence of Thismia daemona extends the range of this group northward for the first time. Dr. Sahut Chantanaorrapint of Prince of Songkla University expressed surprise at the discovery, noting that the conditions in Thong Pha Phum National Park were unlike those typically associated with Thismia species. He emphasized the importance of the find, stating that it expands scientific understanding of the genus’s ecological adaptability. The plant’s striking features, including its dark coloration and distinctive shape, were cited by researchers as justification for its name, which reflects both its visual characteristics and its elusive nature. The species is currently considered critically endangered due to its extremely limited distribution. Only fewer than 50 individual plants have been observed in an area smaller than a football field. While the location is within a protected national park, the site is also frequented by tourists, raising concerns about potential threats to the fragile ecosystem. Conservation efforts will need to balance protection with public access to ensure the survival of the species. Dr. Chantanaorrapint proposed a strategy involving community participation and sustainable practices aligned with the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere program. By engaging local populations in conservation initiatives, he believes it might be possible to preserve the microhabitat while promoting ecotourism that benefits both the environment and nearby communities. Such an approach would require careful planning and collaboration among scientists, environmental organizations, and local stakeholders. The publication of the study in PhytoKeys provides detailed documentation of the species based on both morphological and molecular analyses. The research team included experts from multiple institutions, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the work. Their findings contribute to ongoing efforts to catalog and understand rare and understudied plant species, particularly those with specialized ecological requirements. The discovery of Thismia daemona underscores the continued importance of biodiversity research in tropical regions. As climate change and human activity increasingly threaten ecosystems worldwide, identifying and protecting such rare species becomes more urgent. Scientists emphasize that further studies are needed to fully understand the ecological role of Thismia daemona and to develop effective conservation strategies tailored to its specific needs.

Warum Faktentreue (85): The article accurately describes the discovery of Thismia daemona in Thong Pha Phum National Park, citing the institutions involved and the publication in PhytoKeys. It provides specific details like elevation and habitat, aligning with the primary source document. However, it omits some technical d

Warum Objektivität (78): The article presents the discovery in a somewhat dramatic manner with terms like 'devil flower,' which may be seen as emotionally charged. While it remains largely factual, there is a slight tilt towards emphasizing the uniqueness and surprising nature of the find.
