The dispute over the cycling route between Kamnik and Vršnjak has reached a critical stage, with the local municipality and the Slovenian Nature Protection Institute (ZRSVN) remaining divided over the proposed path. The issue centers on whether the cycle path should follow the narrow, less-traveled trail through the area known as Nevljica or the more heavily used regional road. Both parties have expressed firm positions, with neither side willing to compromise on their core concerns. The conflict began several years ago when the Municipality of Kamnik identified the need for a safer and more sustainable cycling connection between the town and Vršnjak. The existing regional road, which runs through the Tuhinjska Dolina valley, is frequently used by vehicles and lacks dedicated cycling infrastructure. Local officials argue that this makes it unsuitable for long-term use by cyclists due to safety risks and the potential disruption of pedestrian pathways already under construction. They propose an alternative route along the Nevljica trail, citing its gentle gradient, scenic views, and minimal environmental impact. However, the Slovenian Nature Protection Institute has raised serious objections to the proposed Nevljica route. In 2023, the institute was tasked with evaluating two possible routes for the cycling link. Its assessment concluded that using the Nevljica trail would violate nature conservation principles. According to the institute’s findings, the area is not just a single protected habitat but a complex network of rare hydrological, geological, and geomorphological features. It supports unique ecosystems and rare plant species, many of which are endemic to the region. As such, any development within this area must be carefully managed to avoid ecological damage. The institute emphasized that national regulations require all interventions to take place outside designated natural values areas whenever feasible. In this case, they claim there is a viable alternative, another route that avoids the Nevljica area altogether. This option, while still requiring careful planning, would better align with environmental protection standards and reduce the risk of harming sensitive habitats. Despite these recommendations, the municipality continues to push for the Nevljica route, arguing that it offers a more practical and economically beneficial solution. The mayor, Matej Slapar, stated that the current regional road is too congested and unsafe for cyclists, making it an impractical long-term investment. He pointed out that the existing footpath along the Nevljica trail could be adapted for cycling with appropriate measures, ensuring both safety and environmental responsibility. The disagreement has persisted for several years, with repeated attempts at negotiation failing to yield a consensus. However, the municipality has recently prioritized resolving this issue among its key transportation projects. The mayor expressed hope that a new round of discussions will lead to a mutually acceptable solution, one that balances the needs of cyclists with the preservation of natural landscapes. As the debate continues, both sides remain committed to their respective goals. The municipality seeks a functional and safe cycling route that enhances connectivity and economic opportunities, while the Nature Protection Institute insists that any development must prioritize the integrity of the environment. With no immediate resolution in sight, the situation remains unresolved, leaving the future of the cycling link uncertain.
