A summer language school in Slovenia has become a remarkable example of cultural exchange, bringing together students from around the world to learn Slovenian. The 33rd Summer School of the Slovenian Language, hosted by the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Primorska, took place in Istra over the past ten days. Rather than focusing solely on linguistic challenges, the program emphasized connection and communication, offering participants a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture and language of their hosts. The course attracted 50 students from 16 different countries, including Italy, Hungary, Serbia, Russia, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, and Australia. These learners came with varying levels of proficiency in Slovenian, yet they shared a common goal: to improve their language skills through hands-on experience. The curriculum included both classroom instruction and practical activities designed to enhance listening comprehension, pronunciation, and conversational fluency. Students were encouraged to engage with local communities, participate in cultural workshops, and practice speaking with native speakers. One of the highlights of the program was its emphasis on real-world application. Participants had the chance to interact with locals, attend traditional festivals, and even join cooking classes that introduced them to Slovenian cuisine. The school’s organizers stressed that language learning extends beyond grammar and vocabulary, it involves understanding the rhythm and nuances of speech, as well as building meaningful relationships. This approach helped create a supportive environment where students could confidently experiment with their language skills without fear of judgment. The school’s name, “Halo, tukaj slovenski Mediteran!” (“Hello, this is Slovenian Mediterranean!”), reflects the region’s coastal setting and its role as a bridge between cultures. Istra, located along the Adriatic Sea, has long been a hub for international cooperation and education. The choice of location added a layer of authenticity to the learning experience, allowing students to explore the natural beauty of the area while deepening their appreciation for the Slovenian language. Participants described the experience as transformative. Many noted how the structured yet flexible format of the school allowed them to progress at their own pace while benefiting from peer support. Some students found particular value in the informal settings, such as group discussions and social gatherings, that mirrored everyday conversations in Slovenia. Others highlighted the importance of mentorship, with instructors providing personalized feedback and guidance throughout the week. Looking ahead, the organizers plan to expand the program’s reach in future years, aiming to include more students from diverse backgrounds. They hope to continue fostering cross-cultural dialogue and mutual respect among participants. As one student put it, the experience was not just about learning a new language, it was about gaining a deeper understanding of another way of life.
