The Julian Alps in Slovenia have been nominated for the prestigious title of "Most Desirable Region in Europe" within the framework of the Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards 2026, one of the most respected travel awards in the United Kingdom. The nomination recognizes the unique blend of untouched nature, rich cultural heritage, top-tier local cuisine, and genuine hospitality found in the region. Officials from the Bohinj Tourism Office emphasized that this recognition is primarily due to the efforts of the local communities and their dedication to preserving the character of the Julian Alps. Visitors can cast their votes online through the Julian Alps Community website until the end of October. The region has experienced a surge in visitor numbers during the current exceptionally hot summer. Key tourist centers such as Bled, Bohinj, and Kranjska Gora have already seen a notable increase in overnight stays before the peak season. At present, the season can be considered highly successful. However, there is an increasing need for effective management to handle the rising demand. According to Blaž Veber, director of Tourism Bled, the heatwaves have contributed significantly to the transformation of the Julian Alps into a major summer tourist destination. This marks the first time in history that the Alps account for nearly 40 percent of Slovenia’s total visitation, compared to approximately 30 to 31 percent in previous years. Although he acknowledges that each year will not be the same, the trend is clearly moving in this direction. June alone saw an eight percent increase in visitors to Bled compared to the same period last year. A ten percent rise in overnight stays was recorded in the first half of the year. The main growth occurs in the pre-season months of April, May, and June, while July and August offer limited room for expansion. Traditionally, the largest number of overnight stays are generated by guests from the United Kingdom and Germany, followed by the United States. Other key markets include the Netherlands, Hungary, and Poland. Currently, Blejski tourism is focusing heavily on the North American market, which has already resulted in increased visits from Canadian tourists. Promotional activities aimed at extending the season position Bled and its surroundings as a destination for relaxation and rejuvenation, appealing to both active explorers and those seeking a more leisurely experience. Emphasis is placed on local experiences and reinforcing the identity of the region. Veber expressed satisfaction over recent investments in infrastructure and tourism offerings, noting the opening of a new central parking facility, renovations to the ice rink and shore of Mali Zaki, and the establishment of a cycling connection between Bled and Bohinj. Upcoming projects include the reconstruction of Riklijeva villa, renovation of the Grand Hotel Toplice, and the restoration of the guesthouse in Velika Zaka. Next year, the Lahov Museum of Contemporary Art is expected to open its doors. In Bohinj, the current tourist season is also proving highly successful, with a 14 percent increase in overnight stays compared to the same period last year. May saw a 30 percent increase, and June a 20 percent increase, according to Klemen Langus, director of Tourism Bohinj and coordinator of the Julian Alps Community. He noted that the growing number of visitors necessitates greater engagement in managing tourism effectively. Langus believes that the example of the Slap Savica, which the public institution Triglav National Park recently transferred to Tourism Bohinj, will serve as a model for best practices in managing natural values, visits, and various activities in the Julian Alps, ranging from water sports and cycling to hiking, tourism offerings, and mobility patterns. Luka Vrančič, director of Tourism Kranjska Gora, confirmed that challenges arise especially during peak seasons, particularly when favorable weather conditions and high temperatures lead to an increase in day-trippers. He believes sustainable management of destinations must be strengthened. This year, Kranjska Gora has recorded a 10 percent increase in overnight stays. Vrančič expressed satisfaction with the level of visitor interest. Much of the activity is directed towards periods before and after the season, which has proven successful in recent years. A significant portion of the increase in visitors is observed in April, May, June, and October, thereby extending the summer season. He emphasized the importance of the hard work of the tourism industry, supported by high temperatures and the geopolitical situation in the world. The greatest increase in visitors comes from higher-income countries, as well as from the United Kingdom and North America. According to Vrančič, the Zgornjesavsko Valley still lacks sufficient tourism, as the valley is vast and offers numerous opportunities for development. A new initiative called Yes 100% Local has been launched to connect local food producers with tourism providers. The project, initiated in 2025, aims to strengthen the local food supply chain and currently involves around 100 farmers, food producers, restaurant owners, and other tourism professionals. Logistics routes have been established to accommodate areas such as the lakeside resort of Bohinj, the ski resort of Kranjska Gora, and Posočje, known for its emerald-green Soča River. Two cold storage facilities in Gorenjska and Posočje serve as pickup points for the project. Staff members collect the food and deliver it to customers who have ordered it. The goal is to create long-term partnerships between farmers and tourism providers. The initiative represents the culmination of years of effort to promote locally sourced food. Tourism in Slovenia has shown tremendous potential, with record-breaking figures recorded just a few months ago in June. Alpine destinations have experienced the strongest growth. Bohinj receives around 350,000 annual visitors, and considering day-trippers, the number is even larger. Across the entire Julian Alps, the figure reaches about 2 million visitors, accounting for more than 4 million tourist nights, according to Klemen Langus, director of Tourism Bohinj and coordinator of the Julian Alps Community, a network of municipalities and tourism organizations. Tourism is an interdisciplinary sector that must foster connections with other sectors, including agriculture. Many farmers produce high-quality food in the area, but they struggle to reach more customers, he said. Langus hopes that the Yes 100% Local initiative will create lasting relationships so that collaboration between farmers and tourism providers continues beyond the project's end in 2027. The project unites eleven municipalities that are part of the Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve. In addition to the aforementioned towns, the partners include Bled, another famous lakeside resort, Jesenice, known for its industrial heritage, and Radovljica, a charming medieval town. The participants aim to expand the project further. According to Greta Lizabeta Črnilogar, the project coordinator, the biggest challenge is to actively involve customers in the scheme. Urška Urbanc, another member of the team behind the project, stated that it was once believed that restaurants and pubs would not buy local because such products were too expensive. However, after speaking with many restaurant owners, she now sees that price is not the only factor, as hospitality providers value the origin of the food and appreciate local ingredients. She would like to see the project's supply chain become so robust that menus are created based on what the farmers have available. Meanwhile, in Croatia, power outages have disrupted the tourist season in Vodice. More than 24 hours of electricity disruption have affected residents, landlords, and hotels, particularly impacting climate control systems, refrigerators, and other equipment. Hotels face difficulties issuing invoices, and some guests are requesting refunds due to inadequate living conditions. Residents argue that the problem is not solely due to increased energy consumption during the tourist season but also due to insufficient infrastructure upgrades following intense construction and the proliferation of buildings. They expect HEP and the city of Vodice to provide explanations and address the issue of compensation and infrastructure improvements. Residents emphasize that tourism depends not only on sunshine and sea but also on basic conditions for decent accommodation. Repeated outages could harm the region's tourist reputation, and if unresolved, might lead to a decline in future visitor numbers.
