Jack Jedwab, president of the Association for Canadian Studies and Metropolis Institute, emphasized the gravity of these findings during a public briefing in Ottawa. He stated that the results underscore the urgent need for stronger enforcement of existing anti-hate policies and improved data collection on incidents of discrimination. Jedwab also called upon federal authorities and university administrators to take immediate steps to ensure safer environments for Jewish students. The survey was commissioned by the federal government before the Carney administration ended the position of special envoy on antisemitism. The last individual to hold that role initiated the study, aiming to gather insights into the lived experiences of Jewish students. The research underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Jewish communities in educational settings and raises questions about the effectiveness of current anti-discrimination frameworks. The Network of Engaged Canadian Academics (NECA) participated in the discussion, highlighting the importance of academic collaboration in addressing systemic biases. Members of NECA stressed that while some progress has been made, much work remains to create inclusive spaces where all students can thrive without fear of prejudice or hostility. The findings have sparked calls for increased transparency and accountability from universities. Advocates argue that clearer reporting mechanisms and stricter disciplinary actions are necessary to combat antisemitic behaviors effectively. They also emphasize the importance of fostering dialogue and education around diversity and inclusion to prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place.
