Die magnetische Anziehungskraft des Friedhofs: Der Siegestag mit Palenta und Zutaten aus vier Bezirken

On Sunday, the town of Grobnik celebrated Victory Day and Homeland Thanksgiving with a traditional feast featuring palenta kompirica, a dish made from yellow, coarsely ground cornmeal, and guests from four different counties. The event took place at the idyllic Kaštelo location in Grobnik, where volunteers known as the Dondolaši prepared the meal despite challenges posed by drought conditions and supply shortages. The gathering included veterans from both Jelenja and Čavli municipalities, as well as representatives from the nearby friendly municipality of Cernik, located in the westernmost part of the Brodski-Posavski county. The celebration began early in the morning with a visit to the final resting places of fallen soldiers and those who died during the post-war period. This tradition was carried out by members of the UHDDR Grobnišćine association, which organizes such visits annually on Victory Day and Homeland Thanksgiving, as well as on the Day of Croatian Defenders. Local officials, political leaders, and individuals who value the sacrifices made during the war for today's freedom attended the event. Representatives from the Ministry of Croatian Veterans, including Minister Karel Balenović’s envoy, were also present. As part of the festivities, the community gathered at Kaštelo for a communal meal. The preparation of palenta kompirica proved challenging due to the ongoing drought, which affected the availability of cornmeal. Normally sourced from Martinovo Selo, the necessary quantities had to be obtained from alternative locations. Cornmeal arrived from two directions: one from near Buzet and another from Gacka, specifically from the renowned mill on Tonković’s stream. The effort paid off, delighting all attendees. Accompanying the palenta was an excellent stew, further enhancing the atmosphere of the gathering. The event also featured performances by the Armada Grobnik, whose choreography added a unique dimension to the celebration. The presence of guests from Cernik, a Slavonian municipality, underscored the regional cooperation and camaraderie among communities. The event highlighted the enduring traditions and shared values of the region, bringing together veterans, local leaders, and citizens in a spirit of unity and remembrance. The efforts of the Dondolaši, who worked tirelessly since early morning, ensured that the feast proceeded smoothly despite logistical difficulties. Their dedication reflected the broader commitment of the community to honor its history while fostering connections across different areas. The celebration concluded with messages of solidarity and mutual support from the veterans and their guests. They emphasized the importance of standing together, helping one another, and celebrating each new encounter. These sentiments echoed throughout the event, reinforcing the bonds between the participating communities.
