Friday night at the Whitehall Bingo Club saw Ellen Hill, a 92-year-old local, enjoying her weekly ritual of playing bingo. Sitting alongside her daughter Valerie, Ellen described herself as a "bingoaholoic," emphasizing that her commitment to the game stems from her decision not to drink or smoke. This tradition, which began decades ago in the now-defunct Macushla Ballroom, continues today at the Whitehall Bingo Club, located on Collins Avenue in Dublin's northside. Ellen, who resides in Portland Row, has attended the club for more than 20 years. Her routine includes attending sessions on Fridays, Sundays, and Tuesdays, reflecting how deeply ingrained the activity has become in her life. During our visit, she shared her perspective on the social nature of bingo, noting that while some attendees are there for the chance to win money, others are drawn by the camaraderie and sense of belonging. Her daughter, Valerie, echoed this sentiment, highlighting that even those who rarely win continue to attend, suggesting that the experience goes beyond mere gambling. The Whitehall Bingo Club occupies a historic venue once known as the Whitehall Grand. Originally constructed in the 1950s as a 1,000-seater cinema, the building was repurposed into a bingo hall in the 1970s and operated for several decades by Gael Linn, an organization dedicated to promoting the Irish language. In the early 2000s, the venue was sold and is now managed by Capital Entertainment & Leisure, a company that operates multiple bingo halls and slot machine locations across Dublin, including in Cabra, Crumlin, and Tallaght. Under the Jack Pott’s Bingo brand, the club is part of a broader network of entertainment venues. Upon entering the building, visitors are greeted by a lively atmosphere reminiscent of a small casino, complete with numerous slot machines and electronic games. However, stepping further back into the main bingo hall transports guests to another era. Rows of plastic tables and cushioned seating fill the space, set against a colorful, patterned carpet. Coin slots at each table allow players to engage in "pongo," a fast-paced variant of bingo played during intermissions. Despite its nostalgic charm, the venue faces challenges due to its status as a protected structure, making it a rare example of a traditional interior in a city increasingly dominated by sleek, modern designs. The club's continued operation reflects its role as a community hub, offering an alternative to more conventional evening activities such as dining out or visiting pubs. While the building's history and character remain intact, its future will depend on maintaining its appeal amid evolving consumer preferences and urban development pressures. As the night progresses, the rhythm of bingo echoes through the hall, underscoring the enduring significance of this social gathering for its patrons.
