Samoan Australian actor Ioane Sa'ula, known for his roles in Bump and Heartbreak High, is set to star in Stan’s upcoming medical drama The F Ward. The show blends elements of Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, and The Pitt, offering a mix of drama, humor, and realism centered around a group of struggling medical interns in Sydney. Sa'ula, who grew up in Canberra, initially pursued a career in professional rugby league before a severe injury forced him to abandon the sport and pursue acting instead. Sa'ula sustained a broken tibia and fibula at the age of 13, leading to a staph infection, eight surgeries, and approximately three months in the hospital. During his recovery, his English teacher encouraged him to explore acting, which sparked a passion that would shape his future. He joined his school’s production of The Addams Family, playing the character of Gomez. “I fell in love with it,” Sa'ula said. “I realized acting is where I want to take my future.” His journey from aspiring athlete to actor continued with his role in Bump, a Stan teen-mum comedy-drama. Since then, Sa'ula has dedicated himself fully to his craft, aiming to become a professional actor. His current project, The F Ward, marks a significant step in this path. The show follows a group of interns at an underfunded Sydney hospital, serving as a second, perhaps final, chance for young doctors who failed their first year of internship. Sa'ula portrays Jimmy, one of the central characters, joining a cast that includes Lola Bond, Alex Fitzalan, Rishab Kern, Annie Boyle, and Emily Barclay. The show features a diverse ensemble of medical professionals, including Dr. Wall, portrayed by British actor Anna Friel, and Dr. Parker, played by Dan Wyllie. Obstetrician-gynaecologist Dr. Matessi is brought to life by Susie Porter, while “rockstar” surgeon Dr. Friedman is performed by Jeremy Sims. The series aims to capture both the challenges and the camaraderie found within the medical profession, drawing inspiration from shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, and The Pitt. Producer and co-creator Dan Edwards described The F Ward as an example of “sunny television,” blending darkness with humor and optimism. “There’s darkness and humor,” he said. “But I think overall Australians are optimistic and warm. If you do something honestly and don’t take yourself too seriously, that comes through, that’s the Australianness of the show.” Edwards has long envisioned Sa'ula as the lead of the series, having first considered him for the role during the early stages of Bump, another show he co-produced. Despite initial concerns about Sa'ula’s age, Edwards remained committed to casting him as the romantic lead. “We always imagined Ioane to be the romantic lead,” Edwards explained. “When he was too young, we were like, he can play older.” The development of The F Ward began around the same time as Bump, with the concept evolving from a simple idea of a hospital-based story to a more complex narrative akin to Apple TV’s Slow Horses, featuring a group of interns navigating the pressures of the medical field. As the series moves forward, it promises to offer a fresh perspective on the challenges and triumphs of medical professionals, grounded in the experiences of real-life interns. With a talented cast and a unique blend of genres, The F Ward is poised to make a lasting impact on Australian television.
