According to reports from the German publication Süddeutsche Zeitung, two suspects, identified as a Russian man holding a Latvian passport and a Belarusian man with a Russian passport, used Italian tourism visas obtained in Minsk at the end of April to enter Europe. These visas were allegedly used to carry out a coordinated attack on Leipzig Airport on 4 August, where German police were forced to deploy a robot to disarm a drone containing an explosive device near a Ukrainian cargo plane. A second drone with traces of explosives was later discovered near the airport. In response to the attack, German authorities confirmed that their investigation concluded the incident was orchestrated by Russian operatives. As a result, Berlin plans to close Russia’s consulate in the former capital of Bonn later this month and terminate the lease for the Russian House, a cultural center in the capital city. The findings have led to urgent discussions among EU foreign ministers, who convened in Wicklow, Ireland, to address the growing threat posed by Russian-linked actors within the bloc. At a press conference in Wicklow, EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the need for immediate action to restrict the movement of individuals associated with Russia. She stated that there was widespread agreement among foreign ministers to implement an EU-wide visa ban for former Russian combatants and to tighten visa requirements for Russian tourists. Kallas noted that the use of tourist visas for sabotage activities highlighted the vulnerability of current policies, stating that it was unacceptable for Russians to enjoy the hospitality of European countries while posing a security risk.
