Electric, hybrid cars have gained a stronger foothold in Türkiye’s automotive sector, marking a notable shift in the country’s vehicle registration trends. According to official data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), the total number of registered motor vehicles in Türkiye rose 6.7% year-over-year to 34.55 million by the end of June, up from 32.37 million in the same period the previous year. This growth was driven largely by continued expansion in the passenger car segment, which accounted for 51.7% of all registered vehicles. Passenger cars, which make up more than half of the total vehicle fleet, saw a steady increase in their composition within the broader transportation mix. In June alone, 194,740 new vehicles were registered, with motorcycles accounting for nearly half—49.4%, and passenger cars making up 37.8%. This highlights the ongoing diversification of the market, with different types of vehicles catering to varying consumer needs and preferences. The transformation in Türkiye’s auto market has been particularly pronounced since 2020. During this time, gasoline-powered cars have maintained a dominant presence, with their share of the passenger car fleet rising to 31% by the end of last month. This represents an increase from 24.4% in 2020, reflecting both sustained demand and evolving regulatory frameworks. Meanwhile, diesel-powered vehicles remain the largest fuel category by number, growing to 5.74 million units from 5.01 million over the same period. However, their proportion of the overall fleet has decreased slightly, falling to 32.1% from 38.3%. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)-powered cars have also shown modest growth, increasing in absolute numbers to 5.25 million from 4.81 million. Despite this, their share of the passenger car fleet has dropped to 29.4% from 36.7%, indicating a gradual but consistent shift away from traditional fuels. Hybrid vehicles have emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments within the automotive industry. By the end of June, hybrid vehicle registrations had climbed to 846,813, a dramatic increase from just 33,690 in 2020. This translates into a 4.7% share of the passenger car fleet, up from 0.3% in 2020. The rise of hybrids reflects growing environmental awareness and government incentives aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Electric vehicles have also seen substantial growth, though they remain a smaller portion of the market. Battery-powered cars numbered 445,939 by the end of June, compared to just 2,797 in 2020. This marks a 2.5% share of the passenger car fleet, up from 0.1% in 2022. The acceleration in EV adoption underscores a broader global trend toward sustainable mobility, supported by both public policy and private investment. Overall, the passenger car fleet in Türkiye expanded to 17.87 million vehicles by the end of June, compared with 13.10 million in 2020. This growth illustrates a dynamic and evolving landscape, shaped by technological advancements, economic factors, and shifting consumer priorities. As the market continues to evolve, the balance between traditional and alternative powertrains will likely remain a key focus for policymakers and industry stakeholders alike.
