A Massachusetts state trooper was killed in a head-on collision with a drunk driver who had consumed nine alcoholic beverages at a local bar before driving the wrong way on Route 1, according to a recent report from the Essex County District Attorney's office. The incident occurred around 2:04 a.m. on May 6 in Lynnfield, resulting in the deaths of both Hernan Marrero, 50, of Roslindale, and Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, from Georgetown. Marrero had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.192, more than double the legal limit, when his Jeep Wrangler collided with Trainor’s patrol car. According to the district attorney’s report, Marrero began his evening at a Waltham restaurant, where he purchased food and received one complimentary drink before leaving at 7:42 p.m. He then traveled to Tribu Mexican Kitchen and Bar on Route 1 North in Saugus, arriving at 9:15 p.m. and being served a margarita shortly thereafter. Marrero later posted a photo of the drink on social media with the caption, “Second stop!!!” Investigators noted that between 9:20 p.m. and 12:53 a.m., Marrero was served a total of nine alcoholic drinks at the establishment. The Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission has issued a notice to Tribu alleging several civil violations, including serving alcoholic drinks after hours and providing free drinks. A hearing regarding these allegations is scheduled for July 28. Despite the findings, the DA’s office concluded that criminal charges against Marrero are not sustainable based on the available evidence. Following his departure from Tribu at 1:56 a.m., Marrero drove approximately 2.3 miles north on Route 1 before attempting to enter a jughandle near Santarpio’s Pizza in Peabody, which allows drivers to reverse direction onto Route 1 south. However, instead of properly entering the southbound side, Marrero grazed a guardrail, ran a red light, and made an overly sharp left turn before re-entering the northbound lanes while driving south. The area featured clear and unobstructed signs warning motorists not to enter Route 1 north from the jughandle, including “WRONG WAY,” “DO NOT ENTER,” and “ONE WAY.” A truck driver who witnessed the Jeep passing through the wrong-way section called 911, and another trooper broadcast a warning about the wrong-way driver to the State Police Danvers barracks and area cruisers. Trainor, who had just completed a public safety detail and clocked out at 1:52 a.m., had his cruiser radio on and tuned to the channel where the warnings were transmitted. His vehicle was the first to encounter Marrero’s Jeep. The collision occurred at high speeds, with Trainor’s cruiser traveling between 60.4 and 68.6 mph and Marrero’s Jeep moving between 56.4 and 61.4 mph at the moment of impact. Crash reconstruction experts determined that Marrero’s decision to drive the wrong way was not due to any mechanical failure of his vehicle. Both men died as a result of the crash, marking a tragic end to their lives. Investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident, focusing on the role of the bar and the sequence of events leading up to the collision. The DA’s office emphasized that while criminal charges against Marrero are not being pursued, the case highlights the dangers associated with excessive alcohol consumption and impaired driving. The families of both victims have requested privacy during this difficult time.
