A driver has been arrested six times in 2025 on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, according to the annual report from the Medical Bureau of Road Safety. The report highlights a troubling trend in road safety, revealing that 185 people died and 1,500 were seriously injured on the State's roads last year due to road traffic incidents. The data underscores the ongoing challenge posed by drivers operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The report indicates that the youngest male driver arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence was 14 years old, while the oldest individual arrested was 95. For female drivers, the youngest arrested was 16. These figures illustrate the wide range of ages affected by this issue. The highest recorded blood alcohol concentration among drivers was 450mg/100ml, which exceeds the legal limit for fully licensed drivers by nearly nine times. The legal limit stands at 50mg/100ml of blood. The report further notes that 12 drivers were arrested four times, 28 were arrested three times, and 237 were arrested twice during the past year. This pattern suggests a recurring problem among certain individuals who repeatedly engage in dangerous driving behavior. In his foreword, the bureau’s director, Prof Denis Cusack, emphasized the need for legislative action to address the public safety risks associated with repeat and high-risk intoxicated driving offenses. Cusack pointed out that alcohol and drugs remain significant contributors to road traffic incidents. He highlighted that cannabis, cocaine, and benzodiazepines were the most frequently detected intoxicants alongside alcohol. The average levels of these substances in samples continued to exceed legal thresholds, indicating their substantial impact on driving performance and accident risk. The combination of drugs with each other or with alcohol was particularly concerning, as such mixtures can significantly impair judgment and motor skills. The statistics reveal that driving under the influence is primarily a male-dominated issue, with men accounting for 85% of all blood and urine samples tested. Women made up the remaining 15%. Among the male drivers arrested, 78% were under the age of 45, with the largest group falling within the 25 to 34-year-old range. This demographic breakdown provides insight into the specific populations most at risk. Bureau chairman Sean Quigley stated that the role of alcohol and drugs in road traffic incidents continues to be a critical concern. He noted that the types of drugs used by drivers are evolving, mirroring broader societal trends in drug use. This shift necessitates updated strategies and policies to effectively combat the growing threat posed by impaired driving. As the report makes clear, addressing this multifaceted issue requires sustained efforts from both law enforcement and policymakers.
