A groundbreaking infrastructure project has reached a major milestone with the completion of the main spans of the Zhangjinggao Bridge over the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province, China. The bridge, which began construction in July 2026, marks a historic achievement in civil engineering, setting six world records and introducing six new structural solutions. With a total length of 7.9 kilometers, the bridge will connect the cities of Zhangjiagang, Jingjiang, and Rugao, significantly reducing travel time between these urban centers and accelerating regional economic integration within the Yangtze River Delta. The bridge’s central span measures 2,300 meters, making it the longest suspension bridge span in the world. This surpasses the previous record held by the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge in Turkey, which had a span of 277 meters. It also becomes the first Chinese suspension bridge with a span exceeding 2,000 meters, showcasing the country's growing expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects. The southern tower, standing at 350 meters, equivalent to a building of 125 floors, is set to become the tallest tower of any suspension bridge globally. All four main towers were completed in December 2025, allowing work to transition into the phase of constructing the upper structure. In June 2026, the installation of cable hangers and anchor blocks commenced at the northern anchorage site. The bridge is designed for two-way traffic with eight lanes, intended to support speeds up to 100 kilometers per hour. Its navigable clearance beneath the deck stands at 69.5 meters, ensuring safe passage for vessels along the river. Located on a critical waterway, the bridge is situated 28 kilometers downstream from the Jiangyin Bridge and 16 kilometers upstream from the Huzhou Bridge, reinforcing its strategic importance in the region’s transportation network. Construction of the bridge is being carried out by the China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and China Railway Hi-Tech Industry. Approximately 34,000 tons of steel were used in the fabrication of the towers, highlighting the massive scale of materials required for such an ambitious project. The bridge is part of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, aimed at enhancing connectivity and promoting sustainable development across key economic zones. By linking three major urban hubs, the bridge is expected to shorten travel times and boost trade and investment in the area.
