A federal high court in Lagos has scheduled a ruling on an application by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to destroy a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory seized in a remote area of Ogun State. The court, presided over by Justice Musa Kakaki, will deliver its decision on Friday, following a special sitting held within the illicit laboratory located in Mowe village, Ijebu East Local Government Area. The discovery of the lab came during a joint operation involving Nigerian and Mexican authorities. Operatives found the facility equipped with machinery and chemical supplies used to manufacture approximately 2,419.48 kilograms of methamphetamine, which is estimated to have a value exceeding N480 billion. The seizure occurred in a secluded part of the forest, highlighting the complexity and scale of cross-border drug operations. The NDLEA has charged ten individuals, including three Mexican nationals, Juan Carlos Torrero, Nemecio Felix, and Jesus Valles, and seven Nigerians: Anochili Nwankwo, Sunday Christian, Egwuonwu Victor, Igwe Remijus, Ifeanyichukwu Joshua, Omonughwa Orike, and Emeka Nwobum. These defendants face an 11-count indictment alleging their involvement in establishing and operating the illegal laboratory. The charges include possession of controlled substances, financing of a drug trafficking network, and transportation of precursor chemicals from Lagos to the site. Among the precursor materials seized were toluene, phenyl-2-propanone (P2P), phenylacetic acid, acetone, and hydrochloric acid. These chemicals were reportedly transported via vehicles such as a Toyota Tacoma, a Mercedes-Benz with registration number APP 942 YL, and a Toyota Highlander marked GWA 662 DJ. The defendants are also accused of unlawful possession of large quantities of these substances, including 358 kilograms of toluene, 1,834 kilograms of hydrochloric acid, and 22.5 kilograms of acetone, all allegedly destined for methamphetamine production. All ten defendants entered not guilty pleas during the trial. During the proceedings, the prosecution called upon Mr. Ajilema Anebi, a clandestine laboratory expert, who testified about the substances recovered from the site. He stated that the items found were used for producing and storing large quantities of methamphetamine intended for export. His testimony included explanations of how alcohol and hydrochloric acid contribute to the production of benzene, a key component in methamphetamine synthesis. The court previously admitted into evidence the inventory of chemicals and equipment retrieved from the laboratory. Prosecuting counsel, Adekunle Adebanjo, reminded the court of the NDLEA's ongoing application for permission to destroy the facility, which was described as a multi-million-dollar operation. However, defense counsel, led by Chief Benson Ndakara, challenged parts of the prosecution’s evidence and objected to certain exhibits presented in court. Following arguments from both sides, Justice Kakaki adjourned the case until July 24 to render a verdict on the NDLEA’s request. The outcome of this ruling could set a precedent for handling similar cases involving international drug networks and the destruction of evidence related to large-scale narcotics production.
