Cerkno: Nach vielen trockenen Jahren zwei Investitionen abgeschlossen

In the small town of Cerkno, long overdue infrastructure projects have finally reached completion after years of delays and financial hurdles. Two key developments, construction of a new sports park and the ongoing efforts to establish a community center, are set to transform local life. The sports park, once envisioned as a replacement for deteriorating tennis courts, has been completed with support from both national and regional funding sources. Meanwhile, plans for a new kindergarten and residential units remain stalled due to insufficient funds, despite detailed planning documents already in place. The sports park was originally intended to replace the aging tennis courts at Hotel Cerkno, which had fallen into disrepair. The new owner of the hotel, Postojnska Jama, facilitated the land swap necessary for the project. However, the process was far from straightforward. Initial bids were unsuccessful, and the municipality had to wait several years before securing partial funding. A total of 250,000 euros was obtained through a grant from the Sports Foundation, while another 85,000 euros came from other sources. This amounted to roughly one-third of the required budget for the park’s development. The finished park features multi-purpose sports fields, fitness equipment, playgrounds, and even a climbing wall, a novelty in the area. Located near the main road and river, the park presents unique challenges for maintenance. Despite these obstacles, the project has been completed and will officially open during the Cerkno Summer Festival on July 24th at 5 pm. The opening ceremony will include demonstrations of rock climbing and two sporting tournaments. Meanwhile, the bus stop, designed to be a minimalist yet functional addition to the town's transportation network, is still under construction. The mayor, Gašper Uršič, explained that the final phase requires coordination with the road authority to finalize the layout of access routes. Without this, the bus stop cannot be fully operational. The new stop, located on the outskirts of Cerkno, is expected to improve safety and provide a pedestrian zone, though residents say they would rather see the money spent elsewhere. Local families are eager for a new kindergarten and additional housing, particularly given the outdated conditions of the existing preschool built over 45 years ago. While plans for these projects are complete, funding remains elusive. The estimated cost for renovating the former hotel building into a health care facility and pharmacy is around three million euros, though officials expect the actual cost to be significantly higher. The mayor confirmed that the renovation will begin, but it will require a loan to proceed. The town continues to face financial constraints, with multiple projects competing for limited resources. While some initiatives have moved forward, others remain in limbo. The completion of the sports park marks a step toward improving public services, but the broader challenge of securing sustainable funding for essential infrastructure persists. As the summer festival approaches, the focus shifts to celebrating progress, even as uncertainty lingers over future developments.
