A professional football club in Melbourne’s northern suburbs faces mounting pressure to address the behavior of a small group of supporters who displayed offensive banners during a state league match on Saturday. The incident occurred between the Preston Lions and South Melbourne FC, resulting in a nil-all draw. The banners, which included sexist and provocative messages, sparked outrage from officials and community leaders. The match took place at a stadium in Melbourne, where members of the Preston Boys ultras group were photographed holding a banner reading “anti-Hellass.” This slogan, along with other banners shared on social media, featured explicit language and misogynistic content targeting Greek women. The banners were widely condemned as inappropriate for a community sports event. Preston Lions, a club deeply connected to the Macedonian Australian community, issued a statement condemning the banners, emphasizing that they do not represent the club or its majority of supporters. The club reiterated its stance against such behavior, stating it would not tolerate it. Meanwhile, South Melbourne FC, known for its association with the Greek diaspora and referred to as the Hellas, praised its supporters for maintaining a disciplined and respectful demeanor throughout the match. The club acknowledged the passion of its fans while reaffirming its commitment to a safe and inclusive environment for all attendees. Football Victoria, the governing body overseeing the competition, described the actions of the Preston supporters as “abhorrent” and “deliberately intended to provoke, divide and inflame.” The organization called the behavior “disgraceful” and stated that those responsible should have no place in the sporting community. It confirmed that it is collaborating with venue operators and Victoria Police to identify the individuals behind the banners and pursue all possible sanctions. Officials emphasized that they would take every measure necessary to ensure these individuals are not allowed to return. Community representatives from the Greek Australian population expressed concern over the incident. Georgina Papafotiou, president of the Pan Hellenic Women’s Federation of Australia, highlighted the need for greater awareness and education among supporters regarding the impact of their actions. She stressed that parents should not have to explain degrading sexual slogans to their children at community events. Additionally, she urged authorities to maintain safe spaces free from sexism and ethnic vilification. Konstantinos Kalymnios, another Greek Australian community member, submitted a formal complaint to Football Australia, describing the banners as “sexist, ethnically derogatory, obscene and degrading.” He noted that Greek women, including children and young spectators, were subjected to public insults that combined their ethnicity and gender in a vulgar manner. His comments underscored the broader implications of such behavior beyond the immediate context of the match. Football Victoria reiterated its stance that the sport should not serve as a platform for hatred, intimidation, or vilification. The organization warned that anyone using football to promote such attitudes is undermining the core values of the game.
