Iran FM confirms reports Israel planned to target Tehran's negotiators

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed reports that U.S. officials believed Israel may have attempted to assassinate Iran's top negotiators during ceasefire talks with the United States in Pakistan. The talks, mediated by U.S. Vice President JD Vance, resulted in a framework deal signed on 17 June to halt hostilities. Both nations are now observing a 60-day extended ceasefire to facilitate a final agreement. U.S. concerns over threats to Araghchi and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf escalated during earlier negotiations, prompting Washington to alert regional allies about potential Israeli targeting. The New York Times and The Washington Post reported heightened security measures, including Pakistani fighter jet escorts for the Iranian delegation and an emergency landing due to perceived Israeli threats. The conflict began on 28 February with U.S.-Israeli strikes that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior Iranian officials. Neither the U.S. nor Israeli governments have officially commented on the alleged assassination plot.

Venezuela's interim leader defends earthquake response as death toll tops 2,500

Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, defended her government's response to two powerful earthquakes that struck on 24 June 2026, killing over 2,500 people and damaging hundreds of buildings. Despite criticism over the pace and coordination of relief efforts, Rodríguez denied allegations of underreporting deaths and blamed the media for exploiting the crisis. Satellite imagery suggested the damage might be worse than officially recorded, while reports of potential UN aid shipments raised questions about transparency. Opposition groups claimed over 38,000 people were missing, and Rodríguez rejected claims that victims were left to search for survivors without assistance. The disaster highlights challenges facing Rodríguez, whose interim leadership is nearing its end, and underscores ongoing tensions between the government and critics. International aid has been welcomed, including from the U.S., Ecuador, and Israel, as search operations transitioned to body recovery.

Rescued bile bears released in Denmark forest

Six Asiatic black bears rescued from bile farms in South Korea have begun living in a forest habitat at Denmark’s Knuthenborg Safaripark after an international rescue effort. The bears were transported via truck and plane from South Korea to Denmark, where they underwent a careful release process. They were initially placed in enclosures before being allowed to explore the park’s Bear Forest, where they showed signs of adapting to their new environment. The relocation followed over two years of collaboration between NGOs, veterinarians, and authorities in both countries.
